Alameda is a city located in Contra Costa County, California. The population was 153,829 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Contra Costa County and home to both Alameda State University and Livermore Valley National Laboratory. The name comes from the Costanoan word "alumna" meaning "a student." One of the earliest people to live in Alameda were Native Americans, who settled in what is now eastern Alameda in 1825. Rancho San Antonio de Atwater was granted to Jose Maria Torres by Spanish Governor Manuel Nieto on September 3, 1827. The early settlers built their homes along creek beds and irrigation canals which provided water for their crops and forlater schools. The city began as a small station on Rancho Rinconada near where it stands today. On November 10, 1853, an act of Congress authorized the construction of a Union Pacific Railroad line between Oakland and Sacramento; this line became known as the Northern Pacific Railway (NP). In 1865, NP donated land to become part of what would become Alameda County; this area included most of what is now east Alameda. The railroad brought new life to town with its passengers and goods coming through town on makeshift tracks constructed over year-long intervals. As development increased along Highway 24 throughout central Contra Costa County – including much of east Alameda – NP donated more land for development around Town Center Drive & Park Avenue in 1955-1957 within sight of downtown Hayward & north BART Station

Since its inception, the Coast Guard has been dedicated to protecting our nation's coasts and waters. In addition to providing coastal security,the Coast Guard also provides assistance to local law enforcement and helps with maritime search and rescue missions. The service is also responsible for enforcing federal fishing laws, protecting national wildlife resources, and responder services for both public safety events and natural disasters such as hurricanes or earthquakes. Today, there are over 5,000 members of the Coast Guard who serve around the world including in many countries that have prominent coastline including Japan, Spain (Canary Islands), Haiti (Leeward Islands), Australia (Brisbane Reef), Bahrain (Khobar Peninsula), Kuwait (Fahmiyah Island), Qatar (Qatar Peninsula) - all of which provide critical support for our homeland security mission while ensuring maritime trade opportunities for American businesses.
Alameda is a city in Contra Costa County, California, United States. The population was 103,187 at the 2010 census. It was founded in 1853 by Lovat and other settlers as a tiny outpost on a hill above the San Francisco Bay. By 1860, Alameda had become an important agricultural center with land irrigated from groundwater sources. The discovery of oil in 1911 led to rapid growth in Alameda and its adjacent counties. In the 1930s, Alameda became one of the most diverse cities in America with large numbers of Italians, Chinese Americans, Japanese Americans and Latinos. During World War II, Alameda played an instrumental role in the defense of California by manufacturing munitions used by the military. After the war ended, growth resumed and Alameda achieved status as an economically prosperous city with high-quality public education and social services. In recent years, belt-tightening Measures implemented by City Hall have hurt economic developmentletting some families leave for lower cost communities while suppressing job growth; however these measures are being challenged through lawsuits filed by community groups that allege their losses were not accurately reflect
The city of Alameda was founded in 1853 by Captain John D. Sloat, who named it for General George Armstrong Custer, the leader of U.S. Cavalry during the Indian Wars. The city grew rapidly due to its location at a natural crossingroads and its status as a port on the San Francisco Bay. In 1868, Alameda became part of California when it was acquired from Mexico by the United States following their victory in the Mexican-American War. The city's growth continued through the early years of World War I and into World War II, with significant development taking place in areas such as Naval Base Point Reyes and Navy Yard Oakland. After the war, Alameda experienced rapid growth as a bedroom community for San Francisco but also experienced increased recognition as an attractive industrial center due to its diversified economy and expanding population. By 1990, however,Alameda's economy had begun to decline due to factors such as pollution and apartment building construction throughout downtown which have destroyed much of its historic architecture. In recent decades, there has been renewed interest inAlameda both within the city itself and statewide; in particular, revitalization efforts are underway in several areas including downtown, Ferry Building Square,, Embarcadero Marina District., Marin County Airport., and Albany Street
