Alameda is a city in Contra Costa County, California, United States. The population was 97,241 as of the 2010 census. It is the most populous city in Northern California and the third-largest city in Bay Area history after San Francisco and Oakland. The name "Alameda" date back to Spanish times when it was known as Rancho de las Pulgas (Pulgas ranch). The English name arrived with Englishman George Beall who settled at what is now Alameda Point in 1824. He named it after General James Alamo who fought against Mexico in 1836 during the Mexican–American War. The first European settlers were Russian fur traders and their families who arrived between 1826 and 1830. Their village formed part of Russian Mission District No. 7 on shoreline of San Francisco Bay which became part of that mission district upon its transfer from Santa Clara County to Contra Costa County in 1835. In 1846, three brothers founded a small farming town called North Beach on present day First Street near Hayward Creek where they established a tannery, shoe factory, flour mill and other businesses before returning to Russia for several years during which time they acquired land at Fillmore and Livermore Streets south of Alameda Point across from what is now City Hall Park
The first European to visit Alameda was the Spanish conquistador Juan Rodriguez Cabrillo, who sailed up the coast of California in 1542. In 1778, surveyor John Mason returned from returning from a journey along the coast and named the place after Admiral George Vancouver. The first post office at Alameda was established in 1826. The city's incorporation as a municipality occurred on November 12, 1892.Alameda is located on what is now part of Oakland County, Michigan.
