A second theory suggests that someone named Alamein saw an advertisement for land near Sausalito which had been offered for sale by Gideon Welles; he bought the land and renamed it after his home state of Alabama . Finally, another theory suggests that one of Captain John B.'s sons named Arthur decided to move into what is now downtown Oakland because there were no streets or buildings corresponding to his last three full names - Alfred (Athletic Park), Clarence (Clarendon Heights) and George Washington (George Street). However all three sons received only local nicknames untilArthur's death in 1893 without leaving any legacy behind- henceforth everything became known by its first letter only!
