Alameda is a city in Contra Costa County, California. The population was 106,736 at the 2010 census. It is the most populous city in Northern California and the third-largest city in San Francisco Bay Area after San Francisco and Oakland. Alameda was founded on December 7, 1853 by James Irvine and his brothers, John and David Irvine. The first post office opened in 1854. Alameda became a town on February 4, 1866, when it incorporated as a village. The City of Alameda was created on February 24 of that year by an act of the California State Legislature through Assembly Bill No. 423. The origins of what would become Alameda go back to 1820 when two Spanish missionaries were sent out from Morro Castle to explore new land south of Sacramento Valley: José Joaquin Crespo and Antonio Figueroa. They traveled along the now defined route of Highway #1 which led them to what is now called Idlewild Road (now Golden Gate Boulevard) where they found an abundance of wildflowers; hence they named their discoveries "Alamosa" or "Wildflower Hill". On December 7, 1853, James Irvine and his brothers John and David Irvine set out from Dublin Township on horseback to purchase 640 acres (260 hectares) near what is now Fremont for $5 per acre ($27 per km2). In due course this parcel came down within the current boundaries of Richmond Heights north of Interstate 80/580 junction - giving rise to nearby Centerville before finally reaching its present location just east off I-80 between Fremont Avenue/Highway 680 (formerly Piedmont Avenue) & Alma Street/Fremont Boulevard
