This period saw an increase in crime which made living conditions for many residents very difficult; this caused many businesses to close their doors throughout much of 1919–1925. However, following World War II until recently Alameda has been one of America’s most prosperous cities with strong economic opportunities within its borders thanks to its location within easy commuting distance both westward into Silicon Valley and eastward into East Palo Alto/Palo Alto proper. The early 21st century has seen significant challenges faced by Alameda including declining housing prices relative to other parts of Contra Costa County while joblessness remains high despite efforts by Mayor Libby Schaaf et al.. Despite these challenges however notable progress has been made such as construction of a new downtown district that includes large housing projects developments called 2020 Village or 2020 Campus which are anchored around light rail stops providing access directly to central business districts across Berkeley/Oakland/San Francisco etc., investments totaling $1 billion dollars for public transportation infrastructure upgrades including extending BART service into DowntownAlamosa making it easier for workers on lunchtime errands or evening commuters alike not only get where they need go but do so without havingto walk far
