Alameda is a city in Contra Costa County, California, United States. The population was 106,653 at the 2000 census. Alameda is located on the east bank of San Francisco Bay, across from downtown San Francisco. It is one of the most ethnically diverse cities in America and has a large Filipino and East Asian community. In addition to its namesake river, Alameda contains more than 20 neighborhoods and annexed villages. The area now comprising Alameda was first inhabited by Ohlone people as early as 10,000 BC. The Ohlone lived along the eastern shore of San Francisco Bay before they were displaced by theSpanish in 1776. A mission named Mission Dolores was established in 1836 near what is now Oakland; it served as an important center for Spanish missions throughout California until 1848 when Mexico gained independence from Spain and assigned it to their Mexican state of Sonora. In 1853, Gold Rush miners discovered gold near Alameda Point on the north bank of San Pablo Bay; this led to increased settlement within what are today Hayward and Fremont counties due to new gold discoveries in those regions during the 1850s. On November 25, 1855, part of Oakland became independent as the City of Oakland with Colson as its first mayor; Alameda county followed suit two years later on January 3,1857). The city's growth continued with annexation by Richmond (now Berkeley) in 1871 (which had been part of Contra Costa County since 1880), then by Berkeley (again part of Contra Costa County) in 1903. With these annexations came increases in housing prices and traffic congestion which continues to this day despite efforts at regional planning. A major fire destroyed almost all evidenceof civilization alongshorelineofSanFranciscoBayin1900; resultinginthepopulationgrowingonly5percentduringthatyeardue intheimpactofthesafeteamhomes THAT WERE DESTROYED!
