In 1825, part of Rancho Monterey was given to Jose Maria Blanco y Saravia for homesteading by Mexican Governor Manuel Micheltorena. This region became known as El Amalfián because of its high hills and fertile soils.. In 1853, the US government acquired 2 square miles (4 km2) of land at what is now Fremont Street for a new military cemetery called Fort Point Naval Cemetery which would accommodateMOHAWKs (militia units). After many challenges including protests by local citizens, the army finally approved construction on May 6th,1854. The cost estimate for this project was $1 million but only $200 thousand was actually spent. The total amount expended on military cemeteries during that time were $14 million dollars! The next year saw another milestone when BART was completed linking downtown San Francisco with Oakland via a new route called the Embarcadero Freeway. BART opened up new areas near Downtown Oakland making it easier for workers to get around without having to walk over railway tracks
