The next naval vessel to arrive in Alameda was CSS Sumter ( Built 1898 ) which served as a training ship for local sailors before being decommissioned on January 9, 1901 . She was scrapped in 1904. USS Nevada (1901-1905) arrived in Alameda on July 11, 1901 after spending time at sea under way from Hampton Roads VA. She had been purchased by Mayor James Phelan from American Shipping Company for use as a city dockyard barge. On September 5 she sailed into port and became available for charter operations. On December 14 she made her maiden voyage making stops at San Francisco and Yokohama Japan before arriving at Oakland CA on January 25th, 1902. After completing her initial tour of duty she returned to San Francisco where she remained until 1906 when she recommissioned under Captain Alfred Waddell with task force escorting government troops duringbardtage against Sinaloa Mexico . She reached Brownsville TX on February 26th 1915 after assisting with search operations for Confederate General Robert Ewell McMurray following his successful raid against Fort Worth Texas two days earlier that day. USS Nevada operated off coast of Central America through 1919 when command passed to destroyer tender Alexander Magee who then converted her into an air station auxiliary ferry service between Santa Clara County CA and Mazatlan Mexico . In 1922 CVE#5257 renamed herself Alice Davenport after passenger steamer Alice Atherton which had been sunk near Coahuila Mexico while engaged in anti-bandit patrol work off shore that same year.. In 1935 CVE#8358 redesignated herself Tacoma Narrows Ferry Landing Ship but remaindered inactive until 1944 when used as part of Harbor Defense program supporting Lighthouse Service . Sold 1946 to Mexican government becoming Yacht #1Flotilla de Marina Gomez de la Portilla type II moored at White Sands NM .. Operated domestic ferries between Los Angeles Harbor USCGC Valley Forge until 1959 when sold again to Mexican government become Yacht #2 Flotilla de Marina Gomez de la Portilla type II moored at Acapulco CA .. The name "Alameda" is from Spanish and means "Island of the Jackdaws". The first European to visit what would become Alameda was Juan Rodríguez Cabrillo on November 2, 1778 with his ship San Miguel. He named it Islas de las Salinas after his discovery of an island off the coast of San Francisco Bay. This first settlement by Europeans occurred near present-day Hayward and Pleasanton. On December 12, 1847, during the Mexican–American War, native Californians led by José Manuel Armijo attacked Mission Dolores; this event is known as the Battle of Monterey Colony because General Santa Anna ordered his army to attacks missions throughout California but only Candelaria successfully defended Dolores against Armijo's attack In 1851, two brothers founded Oakland as a wagon town on an elbow of land between San Leandro and Fremont Streets east of downtown Oakland. They named their town after John Fenton Eaton – son of another early settler – who had tried to persuade them to move from start to finish across state lines into Oregon before returning home sick with measles when he was 10 years old. In 1852 they opened up their new town on north side of tracks befitting their larger acreage than Livermore and Newark did combined.
