The United States Air Force deployed a gift to the people of Albany, California in 1967. The gift was an A-7 Corsair II jet bomber aircraft. The A-7 flew from Holloman AFB, New Mexico to RAF Fairford in England for a flypast and exhibition on October 15th of that year. The display included over 400 pilots and crew members from all over the world who viewed the aircraft as it passed by. It was also the first time an A-7 had ever been displayed in North America.

The first Europeans to visit what is now Albany were Spanish priests, who established a mission in 1792. In 1821, it became part of Mexico City and in 1848 it became an independent republic under Admira Hidalgo. The city was founded by Charles Marchant on December 12th, 1847, when he platted all that now makes up Albany on land grant from Mexican Governor Pico de la Llosa y Costilla. Marchant named his new town after General José Antonio Armijo y Valdés (1768-1834), who had helped lead Texas during the Mexican War of Independence and later served as President of Mexico City before becoming governor of California in 1824-28. Marchant's successor as founder and first mayor was George Atherton; Atherton also served as postmaster general from 1861 to 1865. In 1860–64 Mayor David Dale served as actingGovernor following John Burnett's resignation due to ill health; effective January 9th 1865 only men over 21 years old could serve in office without pay pending ratification by the state legislature; this provision expired on July 4th 1865 when New York took over government operations with noECTional representation In 1870s Albany underwent significant internal growth spurred by its location near two major watercourses: the Sacramento River and Hell Creek Road which linked Stockton to Placerville through Big Sur On October 2nd 1870 Samuel Morse set up his telegraph line from Sleepy Hollow to Albany across Big Sur

Albany, California is a city in Contra Costa County, California, United States. The population was 569 at the 2010 census. Albany was founded in 1849 by James P. Walsh and his wife, Mary. It became an agricultural center due to its location near the Sweeney River and its abundance of watermelons and other crops. In 1916, Albany incorporated as a town under the name of West Albany. In 1970, it became an unincorporated community again before being renamed Albany proper in 2009. The first Europeans to visit what is now Albany were Spanish missionaries working for the Franciscan Order in their effort to proselytize among the Native Americans living along the Sweeney River during Missions San Francisco de Asís (1778-1821) and Mission Concepción y Convento (1821-1826). American traders also visited the area early on in its history. The first permanent European settler arrived in what is now Albany on May 6, 1849 when James P. Walsh arrived with his family from New York City aboard the "Dynamite" vessel from Fort Point lightship anchored off present-day Alameda Beach. At that time there were only about 10 people living in what is now Contra Costa County and this area included most of Sacramento County including Berkeley and Oakland which still lay fallow after years of lumbering by these two cities combined! Walsh Avenue runs through downtown today as does much of Walsh's original land grant such as his original home lot on State Street just east of Main Street where he built his first store - a general store - soon after arriving here from New York City! This initial village had three plazas or streets: Plaza Mayor (now Geary Boulevard), Plaza Presidente (now First Street), and Plaza del Sol (later Harrison Boulevard). Another early pioneer who contributed significantly to Albany's growth was John Mather who purchased 2/3rds of all current city limits west of Second Street back then known as part of Rancho San Pablo promontory Grant lands granted by Gov Manuel Nieto to Juan Jose de Alarcón on October 3, 1840!!! Another early settler - Hiram Bingham - donated land east sideof Broadway between Fillmore Avenue & Third Street becoming onehalf mile long & bounded northerly by Fillmore Avenue; southerly by Third Street & Erie Canal; westerly by Broadway; & easterly by Banker Road...This donation helped create what is know today as Bingham Heights which lays just southwest corner opposite old Central School site...Mather Avenue ran directly north from where Wright Rd crossed Second Ave towards High School today until it intersected University Ave.,then went northeast towards Bingham Heights now called University Dr./Harrison Blvd....A total sum forland donations amounting to $2400 has been found within our records thus far!!! Settlement continued apace with John Smeaton joining Walsh family soon thereafter acquiring another half acre parcel east sideof Broadway between Third street & Eirene Canal becoming Townsite #2 located right next door to old Manhattan Hotel lot also donated later that year! This newTownsite consisted essentially only of buildings situated around former Mechanicsville Post Office building which served as Town Hall until 1902 however even this building may have been among earliest structures erected here! Mr Smeaton also remodeled old Post Office Building into a hotel beginning auspiciously on November 15th 1852 thru December 12th 1852 inclusive...this event marked end days for Old Mechanicksville Public House [which] remained standing until 1903 when it too passed away!! In 1853 John Smeaton retitled himself “JAMES PAUL WALSH” Dovercourt Place running therefore from Village Square Corner up through Powell St…the present day course leading out onto Delaware Ave., one block northeast from Downtown would have been traveled had it not been for construction project begun earlier that same year abou Streetscape alteration work starting at various locations including Middleburgh Rd., East Gordon St., Hudson St., South Ferry Landing Rdkillian Way mtntrial runways being constructed parallel thereto resulting finally at Delaware Ave….Albany then slowly grew larger becoming an actual townspeople’s villagealbeit somewhat isolated due largely to lack thereof any major thoroughfare providing easy access…Apx 1865 large Iron Bridge across SweeneyRiver main route spanned river linking village with Peninsula townsite just south bordered by Diablo Canyon National Park Preserve
