In 1861, Colonel James Waddell established the first post office in Albany which served as a drop off point for mail sent from California. Waddell was an early settler in Albany and he donated land to establish the post office on what is now Third Street near State Street. The original building still stands today and it is used as a community center today. In 1865, Charlie Munger started his first business- The Munger Coffee Company- which became one of the largest coffee companies in America at that time. Munger began his business by buying ground coffee from farmers throughout New York State. His company grew quickly into one of the largest coffee companies in America with over 150 stores across North America at that time! Today Munger Coffee remains one of the biggest java houses on Earth!

Today this mix can be found throughout the downtown district with its galleries and restaurants serving international cuisine as well as American Dishes from local farms or purveyors like Pappa China or Mama Mia's Pizza down at City Hall Plaza. The growth of Albany began with agriculture; before 1876 there was only 1 acre (0.4 km2) of land suitable for growing crops in what is now Albany Township – but within twenty years over 500 acres (200 hectares) had been planted with wheat and barley - making it one of the most important agricultural centers in Northern California during that time period! The first post office called Albany was established on January 14th, 1872. In 1910 there were just 9 residents living in what is now Albany; by 1920 there were 307 residents! In 1915 construction began on what would become City Hall Plaza which included an arena for sports events as well as new buildings for government services such as fire halls and jails! This plaza would later serve as the nucleus around which all future development occurred within the boundaries of City Hall Park which still occupies much of that space today! On November 3rd, 1954 Alameda County became part of Sacramento County when it was organized from bits and piecesof both counties! At this time also came along some great changes for our community; starting off with service cuts due to budget pressures within Sacramento County itself! But despite these budgetary challenges - including our displacementof several hundred families who moved into new housing developments near State Route 36 during that time – through hard work & determination we managed to keep our name & status quo while annexing other nearby communities; eventually coming out ahead financially (& culturally!) thanks largely to support from our friends & family here at home!!! And so it goes...the alwaysurbantastic stories about how we did it…the Albaneans never stop moving forward no matter how bad things may seem from one day to another

Albany, California is a city in the US state of California. It is the county seat of Contra Costa County and was founded on July 10, 1853 by James Fenton as the town of Albany. The city reached its present size in 1868 when it annexed parts of nearby San Leandro and Newark. The population was 105,916 at the 2010 census. Albany has been home to successive waves of immigrants since its founding—Spanish-speaking Californios in the early 1800s, Anglo-Saxon English residents from England during World War I, Japanese Americans during World War II, and Latinos from Mexico and Central America during the late 20th century. Albany's history is intimately intertwined with that of its sister cities: San Francisco and Oakland. Today, both cities are majority minoritypopulations despite their respective populations remaining relatively staunchly white for most of their histories. The first Europeans to visit what is now Albany were Spanish sailors sailing under Captain Juan Rodríguez Cabrillo on his 1501 voyage from Santa Clara de Asís to Peru. On July 10, 1853, James Fenton purchased 2 leagues (8 miles) east of Point Richmond – near where today’s downtown stands – from José Castro y Ortiz for $2 per acre (0.77 km²). In less than two years he had laid out a small town called Albany on this land which became known as “the City on the Hill” because it dominated views looking down upon San Francisco Bay below. What started as a simple village quickly grew into one of California’s earliest towns with a population totaling 507 people in January 1854 when James Fenton erected a log cabin housing six settlers named Willard, Greenleaf, Rice (of Humboldt County), Goodrich (of Marin County), Brougham (of Contra Costa County), Wills (of Ventura County) and Tilden(Fenton). That same year saw other settlements established at Tomales Bay and Candlestick Point including North Beach with 246 people; Redwood Shores with 101 people; Freemont with 24 people; Portola Valley with 11 people; Salinas with 7 people; Elk Grove Village with 5 people all located within just 8 miles or so of each other on opposite shores of San Francisco Bay! One can only imagine how interconnected these communities must have been! By 1860 there were over 1,000 residents living in what would become Albany proper while also extending out into neighboring towns such as Tomales Bay and Candlestick Point. A group led by Captains George Watts & Gideon Welles built an adobe courthouse in 1865 which served as court house until1872 when responsibility for local government passed to Contra Costa County officials…In 1870 neworfounded United States Air Force Base Groves Naval Air Station adjacentto present day Alameda airport providing vital military support for pacific conflicts throughout the 20th century …present day Sacramento riverfront provided excellent natural waterfront landfill sites perfect for arraying warships moored at various locations ready for launching airstrikes against targets inside China during Operation Neptune Spear….Today many businesses still call Albany home due passionately to its thriving cultural scene including art galleries galore alongwith world renown restaurants like Panera Bread/ZaraBagsGouda Pizza alongwith topnotch nightlife options like The [ ] nightclub located right off Broadway…..A total walk around downtown will confirm this fact! Albany, California is a city in Contra Costa County, Californias most populous county. The population was estimated to be 223,895 at the 2010 census. In 1849 it was called "Natchez". It was founded by the Chinese trader John Sutter and his wife Nancy on the eastern edge of Rancho San Pablo. In 1853, Natchez became part of Sacramento when that city and its surrounding counties were transferred from Imperial County. The first white settler in Albany was George Atherton, who arrived in 1854. After years of growth and development, Albany reached its peak as an agricultural center during the early 20th century with such products as almonds, cottonseed oil and barley. However, economic decline followed throughout much of the 21st century as Newt Gingrich's tenure as speaker of the United States House of Representatives led to a sharp decrease in tax revenue which has led to budget cuts for social programs including healthcare and education. In recent decades Albany has experienced gentrification with new high-rise buildings being erected downtown along with increasing commercial activity around First Street where many old businesses have been replaced by modern structure such as restaurants, shops and condos.
