Albany, California is a town in Contra Costa County, California. The population was 12,495 at the 2010 census. It is the largest city in East Bay District of San Francisco and part of the San Francisco metropolitan area. Albany was founded by Isabella Maria Sanchez on December 21, 1848 as a small settlement on Rancho Rinconada east of present-day Albany City. The name honor General Antonio Mariano Alisalas who fought in the Mexican War and received an award from Emperor Carlos III for his heroism. The first post office in Albany was established on January 6, 1850; it was renamed San Pablo after Rancho Santiago de Los Angeles (now part of Berkeley). In 1852, a sawmill and grist mill were built along with two other mills within what is now downtown Albany; these mills became known as the "Three Sisters." A cotton gin followed soon afterward which made Albany one of the most important towns in East Bay District. In 1854, three stores and about 25 people lived in downtown Albany when it opened its first store on Third Street between Washington and Sacramento Streets; later that year it doubled its size to five stores with a addition of a blacksmith shop and wagon garage. By 1860 there were 10 stores in downtown Albany with 100 residents; by 1870 there were over 150 businesses operating along Third Street between Sacramento and Washington Streets. In 1865-66 Italian immigrants started arriving in large numbers to work on ranches near Lansing Falls which led to increasing business activity along Third Street between Sacramento and Washington Streets including many shops that served Italian immigrants as well as native Californians who had come to live among them. One such business that operated here until 1942 was DonatellO's Palace restaurant which served coffee & pastries from dawn until dusk during World War II service members' off duty hours adjacent to Post Office Square where they could drop off their uniforms for laundering before returning to their barracks at night A new brick courthouse replaced the old wooden building burned down by vandals during prohibition days (1892) just south of Market Square vacant since then - this courthouse would serve as both courtrooms for local prosecutions through 1951 when Contra Costa County consolidated into modern county government In 1895–96 James Wertheimer designed an innovative system for water distribution called "Wertheimer's Westinghouse" which began operations July 1st 1896 serving all parts of Contra Costa County under one roof providing power, ice cream parlors (later called Dairy Queen), grocery stores (later Woolworths), film theaters (Masonic Temple Theatre), bowling alley, auto repair clinics etc... Over time various extensions/widening streets have been constructed including Masonic Temple Avenue extending northward from First St., becoming what are today Elmira Road/I-580 & Jersey Ave./Hwy 101A(former I-580)/Eaton Ave.; same corridor has bewitched Beechwood Avenue into Park Boulevard via Crystal Springs Drive thence becoming Broadway/Thousand Oaks Blvd., finally opening up much more thoroughfare formerly only accessible by invitation or upon special request - making this once landlocked hamlet open up even more than ever before! Although some residents continue to claim original title thereto pursuant to real estate law ([see#Albany history timeline]), generally accepted interpretation is that development rights reverted back permanently or nearly so following consolidation when many privatelyowned properties became part of newly formed county government
