As Marines, we are always deployed with our families and friends. Whether it is a trip to the Philippines for deployment or deployments in Iraq or Afghanistan, there is no one time where we don’t feel the love and support of those around us. When I think about all the Marines that have served in my country, I can only imagine how grateful they are to be given this opportunity and to serve their country with distinction. I was recently introduced to a group of Marines who are currently deployed gift shopping in Kuwait. They were amazing! The mood in the room when they came into the room was one of excitement and happiness as they shared stories about their deployments and what they were doing while away. It really shows just how supportive our military community is when you see these kinds of things happening.

Albany, California is a city in Contra Costa County, California, United States. The population was 25,801 at the 2010 census. It is the largest city in the San Francisco Bay Area and one of the most populous cities in Northern California. Albany was founded by Native Americans on January 17, 1851 as part of what is now Contra Costa County. The town site was chosen because it had good water supplies and was located near two turnpikes that connected to Sacramento City Via Stockton and Visalia. The first post office opened in Albany on October 12, 1857. In 1863–64, Albany became part of the newly created San Francisco Bay Area as a result of territorial changes brought about by the Mexican-American War (1846-48). The city's growth continued during World War II with a population increase of 71%. After the war ended in 1945, Albany experienced an economic decline due to high housing costs and competition from neighboring San Francisco. However, since its rebound during the late 1990s through new development and entrepreneurship, Albany has regained its former stature as a cultural center for northern California. A large portion of downtown Albany is designated as Historic District No. 9 which includes significant buildings dating back to 1851 including Callahan's Drug Store which still stands today on Post Street adjacent to State University of New York at Binghamton’s campus; Belden & Mapes Hardware Buildings; Blacksmith Shop; Pioneer House Museum; Amherst House Hotel; Manning Ward School (now known as Northumberland Elementary School); Mohawk Masonic Lodge #2 Building (now known as Empire Restaurant); Workman’s Chapel (now known as Holy Name Cathedral Church/School).

The town grew rapidly and soon had a population of around 100 people. In 1852, Albany incorporated as a city. It experienced rapid growth during the late 1800s, thanks to its location at the mouth of the Sacramento River and its access to resources like timber, water power, and railroad transportation. By 1912, Albany had reached its peak as a commercial center with a population of over 1,000 people. However, during World War II Albany experienced significant damage due to bombing raids by the United States Navy. After the war, Albany declined in popularity as a result of increased automation and traffic noise from nearby cities such as San Francisco. However, it has been reborn as an urban center with strong ties to community services such as arts and culture.
