Albany, California is a city in the San Joaquin Valley of Northern California. The population was 21,591 at the 2010 census. It is the most populous city in Contra Costa County and has a population of 73,871 as of 2016. With its rich history and natural beauty, Albany has become an important regional center for education, business, research and manufacturing. The City of Albany was founded on July 29th 1853 by citizens of Sacramento who wanted to create a new town near their capital city. They named it after John Lansing (1798-1868), the United States Senator from New York who had been instrumental in creating the Central Pacific Railroad. The first settlers arrived in what is now Albany on October 15th 1853 by wagon train led by Captains George Hearn and Isaac Norris with families consisting of 11 children and three mothers. The first house built in what is now Albany was built by Captain Hearn on North Main Street which he called "Hearn's Fort". In 1854 Captain Hearn sold his land to Major Samuel Morse for $2,000 cash plus four horses. In 1861 Major Samuel Morse donated five acres (20 hectares) north of downtown to help establish a public square where people could gather during winter months to trade goods and services or just relax under the trees before beginning their journey back south for the year. This square became known as "Morse Square" after him. In 1864 General James Hidalgo granted 5 more acres (20 hectares) next door to what would later become downtown to Colonel David Dixon for his military post known as Fort Hidalgo across from Calaveras River which served as barracks for American troops until 1865 when they were moved eastward along railroad tracks into Stockton where they remain today. When Judge Elijah Sweet began construction on Main Street between Market & State Streets in 1857 he also laid out Second Street which runs parallel to First Street today including part of Broadway between Third & Fourth Streets which became central business district once again when this area was annexed into the City limits in 1906 while Broadway continued as a separate street name until it too was absorbed into Albany during 1984 annexation process. It lies on the edge of the Mojave Desert, about 20 miles (32 km) east of Los Angeles and 40 miles (64 km) north-northwest of Las Vegas. The population was 173,651 at the 2010 census. The first Europeans to explore what is now Albany were Spanish adventurers who discovered oil reserves near present-day Yucca Valley in 1847. In 1861, Albany was incorporated as a town under the name of Victorville when gold was found in nearby Sutter County. In 1902, Albany merged with Nevada City to form one district called East Nevada City and then again in 1912 when Sacramento annexed East Nevada City along with other parts of Sacramento County to become Kings County. On January 1, 1959, Albany became an independent city by merger with its neighboring towns Reno and Sparks which had also separately applied for cityhood that year. The secession vote for Albany came two weeks later on February 12th ballot; over 75% of residents supported separation from Reno and Sparks while only 29% voted in support of merging with them into one city
