Alhambra is a small town in the Inland Empire of Southern California. It was founded in 1887 by John C. Fremont and his wife, Eliza Hummel Fremont, on the ruins of an old mission. The community quickly grew to become one of the most prominent towns in southern California. Alhambra has been designated as a National Historic Landmark and is currently being redeveloped as an upscale enclave for elites from all over the world. The name Alhambra comes from Arabic الألمبرية or al-Ḥamīrāt (“the city of beauty”). The original mission was built in 1793 by Franciscan friars under Spanish governor José Gabriel Moraga on what is now known as Park Avenue in downtown Los Angeles. After Moraga's death in 1827, responsibility for the mission passed to Antonio López de Santa Anna, who made it a military post but also personally commissioned artists such as José Clemente Ruiz to create beautiful murals within its walls. By 1851, however, Santa Ana had fallen out of favor with Mexican Emperor Agustín Manuel Carranza and handed over control of Alhambra to him instead. López de Santa Anna's successor Benito Juárez ordered demolition of much of the old missions and replaced them with new cavalry barracks and other buildings that served as part of Juárez's expanding army during his tenure as president (1858-1861). However, portions of Mission San Fernando still remain standing today – including two presidential libraries – and are now home to Alhambra's main square and several smaller neighborhoods. Following Juárez's overthrow in 1862, Mexico became a country again and Alhambra reverted back to its traditional civilian governance under Governor Isidro Fajardo y Pacheco until 1850 when it passed through Mexican hands again until it was acquired by America at the turnofthecentury following gold discoveries at Suttereville Ranch near Sacramento. Alhambra, California is a city located in the Inland Empire of Southern California. It was founded on October 25, 1871 by Antonio Higueras and Mary Elizabeth Rogers. The city was named for Alhambra Palace in Granada, Spain which had been abandoned and destroyed in 1810. The original town plat was filed on December 1, 1872. The first post office opened in Alhambra on January 3, 1873. The population of the city increased rapidly due to the influx of immigrants from Mexico and South America. By 1897, Alhambra had over 20 businesses and its own school system. During World War II, Alhambra contributed many soldiers to the military including Johnnie Cochran who served as a bombardier with the United States Air Force's Ninth Bombardment Group at El Toro Naval Air Station (now Don Pedro Island). Other war-time residents include Harry Sánchez whose business district now includes part of downtown Alhambra; Manuel Ramos who ran Los Angeles County's first all-electric utility company; Juan Gomez (a tailor); Vincente Fernández (the founder of City National Bank) and Ignacio López (the son of Mexican immigrants José López and Cristina Pérez). After years of growth following World War II, there were negative consequences to this rapid growth when social services were not able or willing to keep up with demand from families that were becoming increasingly prosperous. Income levels beganto decline in the early 1960s as American manufacturing jobs moved out to other countries while cheap labor became available in Vietnam and China. As a result, poverty rates rose among both white high-income suburbanites and African Americans living below poverty lines clustered around Interstate 5 corridor east of downtown Los Angeles; these areas attracted what are known as " inner-city" residents because they could afford more expensive housing within easy commuting distance of metropolitan centers but still maintain some degree of economic autonomy from peripheral suburbs such as Alhambra or Carson City NV where crime rates are much higher than those found within their borders. This exodus also created an ever increasing number of foreign born people living outside their home country’s borders who bring along their culture and values which becomes visible when looking at public records such as births or deaths registered within blocks proximate to international border crossings such as LAX Airport or San Bernardino County CA
