The Alhambra Coast Guard Station has been providing the community with first responder services since 1912. The station is home to a variety of rescue and security units as well as a helicopter squadron. The station also offers a wide range of gift options for the public, including art, children’s activities, books, and more. In commemoration of its centennial year in 2012, the coast guard station donated a collection of artifacts from its history to the University of California at Davis Library inSacramento. This donation included artifacts dating back to 1912 depicting the work done by the coast guard at Alhambra.Amongst these items was an old lifeboat named “Sierra Blanca” which had been used to collect debris on coastal beaches during World War II. In addition, another old lifeboat – “Alameda” – had once been used to transport personnel and supplies between various stations along the coast. Alhambra, California is one of the most popular tourist destinations in Northern California. The city was founded by Spanish colonists in 1777 as a small mission town named La Alhambra. It quickly became a favorite destination for Hispanic Californians and their families because of its beautiful architecture, lush vegetation, and rich history. Today, Alhambra is an iconic city with many interesting attractions that make it a must-see destination for tourists in the region. The first Europeans to visit Alhambra were Spanish missionaries who arrived in 1777. They called the settlement La Alhambra, which means "the white house." The mission was built on the ruins of an older Indian village that had been destroyed by aboriginal raiders. In 1820, Mexico acquired California from Spain and moved the mission to San Diego County. However, La Alhambra continued to be used as a military post until 1873 when it was finally closed down due to concerns about its proximity to Mexican war fronts. In 1874, Englishman John Middleton Farquhar sold part of la Mission Vieja (the old missions) for $1 million to famous landowner Pancho Villa. Villa turned la Mission Vieja into his new home and renamed it after himself, Alhambra de las Aguas Grandes (Alameda de las Aguas Grandes). Villa began construction on his own mansion there in 1875 and finished it two years later. The palace served as Villa's main residence until he died in 1901 at the age of 72 years old. During World War II, Alhambra played host to various military exercises including Operation Neptune's Spear which took place between August 1944 and December 1945 inside the palace grounds. Additionally, during the Cold War period it served as an intelligence base for the US West Coast Missile Defense Agency known as "ALHAMBRA". After Villa's death in 1901 his estate passed through several hands before being purchased by millionaire Drische GmbH owner Fritz Moser who renamed it "Alambrach" (al-hām-brahḥ). After purchasing additional properties within la Almira neighborhood near downtown Los Angeles he developed this now defunct community into one of Southern California’s most successful suburbs with luxurious homespun subdivisions still extant today called “Gates” Retirement Community & Villages Incorporated”
The Alhambra Adobe was built in 1847 by Antonio Bandini and is one of the oldestadobe structures still standing in California. The Adobe has been reconstructed three times since it was first built, most recently in 1987.
