Alhambra is a city in Los Angeles County, California. It was founded in 1911 by Mexican Americans and ItalianAmericans from the San Gabriel Valley. The population was 153,865 at the 2010 census. The original name of Alhambra was Indian Wells. In 1887, Rancho La Brea became part of the U.S. when President Grover Cleveland acquired it as part of his land acquisition program following Mexico's revolution that overthrew Spanish rule in 1821. The name change came about because many people who lived near Alhambra called it "Indian Wells" because they thought the water there tasted like oil wells dug out by Indians around that time. In 1910, an agreement was made between Mayor James Hahn and six other landowners to create a town on five square miles (12 km²) of undeveloped land east of downtown Los Angeles for Mexican American and Italian American immigrants who had settled in Pasadena and other areas since 1800. They named the town after their homes: Villa Park, Villa Angela, Villa Celeste, Villa del Palacio de los Heroes Arroyos de Agua Caliente (Alhambra), and Villa Blanca (White Oaks). On December 14, 1911 – two days after its founding – Alhambra’s first election results were published in the Los Angeles Times newspaper: Juana Escobar won an uncontested seat on the City Council; Manuel Marquez took office as Mayor; Francisco Reyes served as recorder; Eduardo Perez served as Town Clerk; Antonio Ramos-Diaz served as Collector; John Heftiş served as Engineer; Arturo Hernandez served as Streets Commissioner; Jorge Garcia served as Assessor/Treasurer/Real Estate Agent for all but one of these positions until his death in 1978. During World War II most Of Alhambra’s men went into military service or worked war production plants such As General Motors’ Willow Run plant which produced tanks and aircraft parts manufacturing aluminum cans with 13% lead content which led to health concerns among workers even today according to study done by University of Southern California professor emeritus Dr Jack Rector https://www2.uscnetworksolutionscenter....alabama-military-base/. In 1951 Elisabeth Hasselbeck moved from her home at 5500 Mulholland Drive to live next door to then Mayor James Hahn where she would have access to city hall through his private driveway
