The city was named for General Pico de la Hoz, who fought against Mexican occupation of California in 1847-48. The first gun shop in Alhambra was founded by two German immigrants, Jacob Grimm and Wilhelm Krantzsch, in 1868. It wasn't until 1899 that an American store opened up on Enterprise Street. In 1907 an armory opened on Main Street and firearms continued to be sold there until it closed in 1971. In 1923 an ammunition company was established on Valencia Street and continues to operate today as Hornady Ammunition Corporation. That same year an Indoor Shooting Range (ISR) was built at 9th Avenue and S Western Road which remains operational today as the Valley Gunnery Range Incorporated. In 1963 the City Council passed a resolution recommending that Alhambra become a "gun free zone." This proposal went into effect in 1964 and handguns were no longer allowed within city limits. Today, Alhambra is home to one of the most diverse collections of handguns anywhere within Southern California; from antique pistols to modern assault rifles, there's something for everyone here! There are even some rarer weapons being offered for sale here such as revolvers made by Colt Firearms Company between 1892-1901 or early Gatling Guns used during the Spanish-American War!
