Alhambra is a city in the County of Baja California, Mexico. The municipality covers an area of , and as of 2010 had a total population of 30,202. It was founded in 1821 by Juan Ignacio Alvarado y Costilla and became part of the Mexican state of Chihuahua on January 1, 1846. The city's first name was "Avila" and it was renamed to "Alhambra" on December 12, 1881 after General Antonio Lopez de Alhambra who donated land for the city. The present-day boundaries were created by an act of Congress on October 15, 1907. The history of Alhambra can be traced back to its founding as a small town located along the banks of the Río Bravo River in what is now Chihuahua. In 1821, Juan Ignacio Alvarado y Costilla founded Alhambra at the intersection of present-day Avenida del Norte and Callejon de la Cruz with his own home as its nucleus. From here he began developing what would become one of Mexico's most important cities with its many fine colonial buildings still standing today such as La Casa Blanca (the White House), El Tesoro (the Treasury), and Arequipa Palace which are among Los Angeles' most popular tourist destinations today. In 1865, following General Mariano Rivera’s victory during the Mexican Revolution, Alvarado granted land eastward from his original settlement to José Antonio Mejía Cerda for development into what would become known as Villa Mejía; this area comprised much later portions that made up modern day downtown Alhambra including Calles Aguirre and Gálvez Streets as well as parts that make up east/west Avenidas del Pino and Callejon de la Cruz streets today). On November 28th 1870 local residents convened at Mayor Manuel Gomez’s house to petition for permission to erect a public square measuring 2 hectares adjacent to San Fernando Cathedral but no action was taken until February 14th 1871 when Governor Agustín Lerdo ordered that “el jardin público ocupará el lugar donde se hallen las iglesias vecinales situadas en la calle San Francisco Xavier” (the public square will occupy where there are old churches located in Francisco Xavier street). With this initial construction permit under way and major landowners already contributing their share (primarily José Antonio Mejía Cerda who owned significant acreage eastward from Villa Mejía), operations quickly expanded beyond Simply plaza into what is now Downtown alhambranquez with workshops, stores & inns dotting inland alleyways while homes grew larger sewage systems (& continued growth until 1905 when all dwellings within municipal limits were required to have private sewer & water systems) becoming increasingly moregie dwellings typified by Late Gothic Revival & Shingle roofed castles over Ionic columns found throughout Spanish America but particularly prevalent in Gobernador Valenzuela's presidencia bastion called Santana Row mansion built c 1790-1800 adjoining Colegio Nuestra Señora Concepción Magdalena Rey incumbent from 1800-1802 . . . [and] subsequent waves during early 20th century saw Villas Urbaninas springing up around downtown areas like Playas Del Carmen etc., however these developments too often followed similar patterns: large single story villas surrounded by high walls & gates facing only pedestrians& vehicular traffic rather than pedestrianized streetside thoroughfares typical Southern Californian architecture prior thereto!
