Alhambra, California is a city in southern California. It was founded by Italian immigrants in 1887 on the site of an old mission. The city is located near Los Angeles and its estimated population was 212,813 as of 2019. They built their homes using local redwood logs brought overland by wagonloads from San Diego’s coastlines. At various points during this early period Spanish missionaries also lived among these arrivals but soon abandoned them because of public opposition to their presence among Christianized Anglo Americans living under Spanish rule. It was founded on November 15, 1874 by Italian Americans and Mexican Americans as a resort town to house workers who were building the new railroad line from Los Angeles to San Bernardino. The town quickly became an important agricultural center due to its fertile soil and wide range of crops. The growth of Alhambra slowed in the late 19th century as new residential subdivisions were built around it. However, population growth resumed in the early 20th century as Alhambra became one of Southern California's most diverse cities with many cultures represented. As a result, Alhambra has become an important cultural center for both Latino and non-Latino residents. The first European settlers arrived in what is now Alhambra in 1834 when José Gabriel Orozco and his crew landed on Rancho Paloma de las Pulgas near present-day Moorpark. They named their community Villa de los Olivos (meaning "Garden of Gold"). In 1835, Antonio Canepa purchased part of Rancho Santa Fe y Tejon from Juan Bautista Alcalde, who had been granted it by Governor Pico Rivera on May 14, 1824. Canepa renamed his holdings La Habana del Diablo (The Devil's Havana), after Miami Beach where he lived at the time. In 1861, Joaquin Murrieta bought part of Rancho Encina from Pedro Menéndez for $1,000 cash and added another 130 acres (60 hectares) to his property later that year. Murrieta built a adobe ranch home known as El Encinas Castle which still stands today within walking distance of downtown Alhambra proper. By 1870, over 100 Californio families had settled in Alhambra; many worked on canals or ranching operations along the old Ventura County Road network connecting Los Angeles with San Bernardino County during this period. In 1875–76 developer John Civey developed what is now downtown Alhambra into a fashionable commercial district surroundingourceshipping wharf businesses such as law offices and grocery stores to inland farmers markets during this period; various theaters including Regal Cinemas were also located hereabouts during this time frame too. While much remains unknown about Civey's development plans for downtown Alhambda because no surviving records exist documenting them beyond sketches or notes made by developers themselves – there are several indications that he aimed to create an upscale shopping district complete with high-end saloons/bars that would draw wealthy Angelenos away from Downtown LOS ANGELES while also accommodating lower class Mexican American residents working alongside Anglo white workers throughout the area. Katherine Dunham wrote about Civey in her history book "A Streetcar Named Desire": "He wanted an arcade [in downtown] where people could buy expensive cigars while they shopped—an enclave where Englishmen could sip Chablis under Oriental rugs". This idea was ultimately not realized but other developers followed suit with similar concepts throughout southern California during this period."
