The Alhambra National Guard was organized on November 9, 1912, as the California National Guard. The unit was established to provide militia support for the state of California. It absorbed the disbanded San Bernardino County Militia in 1914. The first commanding officer of the Alhambra National Guard was Captain Charles H. Blythe. In 1918, the Alhambra National Guard became part of the United States Army and activated under Lieutenant Colonel Harry W. Webb Jr.. On October 15, 1920, Webb organized and commanded a detachment from Alhambra that participated in Operation Redoubt which aimed to suppress a pro-German uprising in Mexico City. In 1924, Major General Herbert J. Morrison assumed command of the Arizona National Guardsmen stationed at Camp Bowie near Tucson and placed them under his command effective October 1, 1924. On February 17, 1926 Major General John Llewellyn Cooke assumed command of both units when Lieutenant Colonel Harry W. Webb resigned from active duty to take command of Company A2 3d Battalion Arizonian Guards (Alhambra) at Fort Huachuca onsen Field north of Tucson . On July 8, 1928 Major General Clinton Ewing took over command from Cooke with orders to place all national guard units throughout Arizona into federal service during World War II through March 31st 1945 as part of Project Paperclip . All but one battalion were placed intoactivated on September 30th 1945 due to budgetary restrictions caused by World War II hostilities and lack of spare parts available for their equipment or personnel). On January 1st 1959 Governor Ronald Reagan called upon all state militias within California to mobilize for federal service pursuant to provisions made applicable by Executive Order 10883 which sanctioned certain aspects of Project Paperclip . This call inspired individual members and organizations throughout California who had been inactive since 1948 or earlier - reactivated groups being named The Californian National Guard Association (TANGO), The Riverside County Sheriffs' Department (Riverside), The Ventura County Sheriff's Department (Ventura), El Sobrante Police Department (El Sobrante) -to re-enlist in order become UDTs or military reservists subject to recall should martial law be declared by President Dwight D Eisenhower . These organizations were then given two weeks notice prior to mobilization status becoming effective on January 7th 1959 All Calgunsouters mobilized successfully responded effectively against Mexican rebels during Operations Altamont and Tequila Sunrise with only a few casualties reported even though there were well over 100 soldiers participating from across Southern California

The California National Guard was activated on December 15, 1912 in Alhambra. At the time it consisted of only a detachment from the city of Los Angeles. The first mission of the Guardsmen was to help keep order during a large civic celebration. On November 12, 1913, the Guardsmen were increased to an infantry battalion and ordered to drill in preparation for World War I. However, when World War I began they were called back home and did not serve in any combat roles. In 1924, the Guardsmen were again raised to a battalion size and given orders to station at Lancaster Airport in California for emergency war preparations. However, this deployment never happened as no need arose for their services and they returned home two years later. In 1934, the Guardsmen were once again called up for mobilization due to passage of The Defense Appropriations Act which authorized $2 million for military procurement purposes within state borders. This act also increased funding allocated specifically towards the California National Guard so that it could be organized into battalions under command of either Army or Navy Brigade commanders. The activation of Camp Pendleton located on San Diego County's southern border had already brought about changes within the Guard since 1931 when it became an artillery battalion commanded by a Lieutenant Colonel rather than Major General like before. As part of this transformation Camp Pendleton became a major training ground for future National Guard soldiers with instruction taking place both here and at Fort Bliss near Austin Texas where drill teams from all over America would take part in maneuvers annually until 1949 when then Commanding General George Custer designated them as Airmobile Infantry Battalions deployed primarily around major cities such as Los Angeles Southern California Reno Nevada El Centro Albuquerque New Mexico Phoenix Tucson Arizona)
