Alhambra is a city and county seat in San Bernardino County, California, United States. The population was 109,433 at the 2010 census. It is located on the eastern edge of the city of Riverside. The Alhambra neighborhood is also home to the University of Southern California and other nearby campuses. The first Europeans to visit what is now Alhambra were traders from Asia who made their way down the coast of Northern California in 1769-1770. They stopped at what is now Orange County and named it after a hill they had seen near San Diego called "Alambraca" or "the white mountain." A mission was founded there in 1784 by Franciscan monks under the name of Santa Clara de la Callejon y Real Monastery; it remained an active religious center until 1821 when its missions were transferred to San Bernardino County. In 1814 Mexican land grants were given for Rancho San Jacinto which became part of Los Angeles County in 1821. In 1836, following his victory over Mexico at Buena Vista, General Antonio López de Santa Anna established MissionSan Gabriel Arcángel as a Catholic mission station on land grant granted by Governor Manuel Micheltorena along with Guadalupe Vallejo to José Joaquín Tarver y Prado. The presidio walls were completed in 1840 after years of construction by military officers under Captain Fernando Lopez who served as governor from 1840-1846 and Lieutenant Governor Francisco Crespo from 1847-1851 inclusive. It is located in southeastern Los Angeles County on the eastern edge of what was once known as Spanish land grant Rancho La Paloma. The name "Alhambra" comes from Arabic الحمارة (al-ḥamārā), meaning "the tower." The first Europeans to visit and explore this area were Tejon Indians led by Juan Bautista de Anza in 1769. He named it after his own home town, Tijuana in Mexico City. Captain James Cook sailed through these waters on his way to find Australia about 1802-03 while mapping part of modern-day Southern California. In 1808 Governor Manuel Micheltorena granted Rancho La Paloma to José Antonio Vargas for $5,000 with an understanding that he would not sell or lease it back until he had discovered a new source of water for irrigation purposes adjacent to his property. This agreement still applies today; only Vargas' successors have violated its terms.
