Alhambra, California is a city in southern Los Angeles County, California. It was founded on October 15, 1869 by Mexican immigrants as part of the Rancho San Gabriel Mexican Alhambra property. The city was incorporated on February 14, 1912. As of 2017, the population was 106,624. The name "Alhambra" comes from Arabic ألامبرة (al-Ḥamba), meaning "the palace." The date of the foundation of AlHAMBRA is unknown but it occurred within a few years after the purchase of Rancho San Gabriel from Diego Rivera and his partners by John Sutter and Mary Pickford for $3 million in 1868. This purchase followed their successful expedition to find Gold at Sutter's new discovery at Coloma de las Americas about 25 miles south of Los Angeles. Domingo Sanchez reports that Rivera had been told by Antonio Jose Ortega y Gasset that he could found a town called Monterey on this land if he could get money from American investors who would make an investment in its completion. However, no money ever came through and Rivera abandoned plans to establish AlHAMBRA even though he had high wedding aspirations for his bride Mary Pickford. In 1869 Angelina Jolie's father purchased 3 acres east of what is now downtown LA from José Gomez which included some buildings which were used as barracks for US Cavalry during the Mexican-American War (1846-48). In 1870 General Mariano Arguelles bought two lots near Palacio de Justicia northwest of downtown LA for $2 million dollars and built himself a palace or Residence there also known as The Golden Palace (). Some say that later Governor Pico moved into this building between 1870 and 1874 when it became available due to Felipe Calderón's Executive Order No.. 810/1875 authorizing construction of Mexico City’s first public hospital under United States auspices with an initial budget of $40 million (). In 1912 Pomona Village Incorporated was created outgrowths around these earlier settlements including East Pomona Boulevard northeast off Interstate 5 and east off I-5 along today’s Sunrise Highway becoming one block wide with Caldecott Avenue running between them adjacent to what are now Downtown Pomona Park and Vinegar Hill Road running north/south through today’s West Covina neighborhoods forming another block wide area bounded by streets GeForce Boulevard to its west then North Hollywood Boulevard continuing east until it meets Santa Monica Boulevard just southwest cornering Beverly Hills Blvd across busy Sunset Boulevard .West Covina Neighborhood Association continues to own most or all these tracts currently inside Downtown Pomonalimits
