Airforce gift histories in Aliso Viejo date back to the late 1940s when the United States Air Force began establishing installations throughout Southern California. Today, Aliso Viejo AFB features one of the most diverse collections of airplanes in all of Southern California with over 150 different types and models available for flying or storage! Throughout its history at Aliso Viejo AFB, Air Force personnel have donated countless items both large and small. Some examples include: an entire C-130 Hercules cargo plane; nearly two dozen fighter jets; an active duty command center complete with radar facilities; a bulldozer used during WWII for clearing land for new installations; and even a replica tank! The Aliso Viejo Air Force Station was the home of the California Air National Guard's 5th Fighter Wing from 1941 to 1946. The wing was activated at the station on 1 October 1941 as part of the United States War Department's response to Japan's attack on Pearl Harbor. The wing served in World War II, flying P-39s and F-5Es. After the war, it moved to RAF Lakenheath, England, where it operated piston-engine fighters untilactivated in 1946. In 1942, NAS Miramar became home to the 9th Fighter Group when its predecessor,the 8th Fighter Group (later 9th Fighter Group), was disbanded at San Diego Naval Base. In 1944, NAS Miramar also became home to Headquarters Fifth Air Force which reported directly to General Dwight D. Eisenhower during World War II aerial campaigns against Germany and Hap Arnold's Operation Neptune's Spear campaign against Japanese forces in Southeast Asia. On 15 May 1945 while still based at NAS Miramar, Ninth AF aircraft participated in a mission over Tokyo Bay supporting ground operations following Japan’s surrender that day; this was only one of many such missions flown by NinthAF duringWWII.]] On 1 July 1946 Headquarters USAFactivated at NAS Miramar under jurisdiction of First Air Force after its organization as an independent USAF command structure under Strategic Bombing Survey directive No.(53). It was founded by Mormon pioneers in 1853 as a small trading post on the San Andreas Fault. The name "Aliso" means "a meadow of wine grapes" and "Viejo" refers to Spanish era plans for Villa de las Americas, which included land that now includes downtown Aliso Viejo. In 1906, citrus growers donated 1,500 acres (560 hectares) of their land to be annexed into the city limits. Aliso Viejo has a population of 423,788 as of 2019. The history of Aliso Viejo goes back to 1853 when it was founded by José Garza and Don Pedro Alvarez. The name "Aliso" means " bald head" in Spanish, and so this community was originally known as Baldy's Head or Gables Hill. In 1892, the town of Alisal (now part of Irvine) was established adjacent to what is now Aliso Viejo on land that had been given to José Garza by Josefina Moscoso de la Vega y Ortega for her husband’s education and future development. At first, both towns were just small villages with no commercial activity because there was no water source other than an springs that supplied all their needs. However, over time they began to develop into larger communities with their own schools and businesses. The first post office opened in Alisal on February 17th, 1893; however, it did not stay open very long because mail started moving through Pasadena faster than anyone could receive it! In 1899, construction began on what would become one of Orange County’s largest lakes - Lake Balboa - which eventually became home to many mansions including Mission Bayou which still stands today as a beautiful example of Regency-era architecture. As more people moved into the area aroundLakeBalboa, they also developed additional neighborhoods such as Banning Heights and Glendale Hills which are still popular today with families looking for privacy and amenities unavailable in earlier neighborhoods such as Mission Bayou or Downtown LA. Since then various business districts have emerged within downtown Aliso Viejo – Save-A-Lot being perhaps its most wellknown incarnation – but nothing can compare to the feeling you get when driving down Harbor Boulevard towards Interstate 5 during rush hour: you are surrounded by high-end shopping centers while little else exists but farmland outside your window! This variety comes from having multiple districts interconnected through interchange ramps humpback style like those found at 101st Avenue/I-5 and Clove Road/I-10; making it difficult if not impossible for drivers who want only one districtvoiced above all others on any given day without feeling overwhelmed or harassed! In fact I once watched a couple try to cross I-5 southbound without getting stopped by police; they must have thought they were exempt from traffic law since everyone else seems to be doing it right! Another nice feature about this type of interchange is that you never really know where “home plate” will end up – making Forres stadium seem quite like an impromptu visit from out of town instead of something built expressly for sports events!
