Aliso Viejo is a city in Orange County, California, United States. The population was 154,651 as of 2013. Aliso Viejo is the second most populous city in Orange County after Anaheim. It is also the most populous city in Northern California. Aliso Viejo's history stretches back to 1853 when it was founded by businessmen John Sutter and his brother Jedediah Sutter on land that now includes much of the eastern side of the City of Irvine. In 1907, Aliso Viejo became part of the newly created county of Santa Ana along with other towns such as Garden Grove and Buena Park. The area where Aliso Viejo stands today was first settled by Native Americans in what is now known as Campo de las Américas (Mountain Meadows). The main village at this time was Chumash Village No. 5 near present-day Forest Lawn Boulevard and Indian School Road. At one point, Pico Rivera Creek flowed through what is now downtown Aliso Viejo and into Temescal Canyon. Over time, the creek's course changed so that it emptied into Temescal Canyon only a few blocks east of Main Street before flowing back out again to join Pico Rivera Creek near present-day Northgate Drive. In 1853, two businessmen named John Sutter and Jedediah Sutter discovered gold vein workings on their property between Showa Street and Orchard Avenue in what is now downtown Aliso Viejo; they named their discovery "Alisalvo." The brothers started developing their new town around this find but were unsuccessful in gaining enough financial support from local capitalists for their venture; nevertheless, they continued to explorations for gold until 1858 when they met another businessman named Augustus Earle who shared their enthusiasm for prospecting in the area but had more money available to him for investment purposes On July 25th, 1858 Earle filed a patent application naming his new town "Alisalvo" after his old mining location south of San Francisco Bay - an event which has been referred to as boththe birth date and beginning of citrus farming in Southern California Earl developed some 300 acres (120 hectares) around what would eventually become downtown Alisalvo including parts of present day Irvine Spectrum Center which he built between 1870-1873 while still owning title to over 1/2 mile (.225 km) northeast corner lot currently occupied by Honda Civic Center ; also included part or all of what are now CenturyLink Field East & West Parking Garage , current home field for LA Galaxy & OC State Fairgrounds . In December 1860 Earle married Anna Maria Chapman who gave him three children: Herman Chapman (1861-1925), Clara Chapman (1863-1959), AnnaMaria Richardson Earle (1866-1945). One year later he rechristened his town "Alisalvo" after Mexican Mission Santa Catalina at 7th St., SW corner Of Mission Row . In 1865 AnnaMariaEarle gave birth to her final child Charles Wetherill Chapman earler born November 12 1865 at 8TH st NW corner Of Market St.). Post Office opened on January 15 1865 under name "Chapmanville". By 1870 about 60%+ acreage had been devoted to citrus production Both Herman Chapman & Charles Wetherill Chapmans lived within walking distance from post office&chickens grew wild nearby!
