Aliso Viejo, California is a city in Orange County, California. The population was 100,711 at the 2010 census. It is the largest city in Orange County by population and the second-largest city in Los Angeles County after Los Angeles. The name "Aliso Viejo" comes from Alisalonga, an Inupiat word meaning "shoreline of oranges." The first European to visit what is now Aliso Viejo was Juan Rodríguez Cabrillo on November 2, 1542 during his voyage of discovery. He named it San Miguel de la Paloma because he thought it would be'side to Sebastián Vizcaíno's ship which had lost its way en route from Mexico City to Catalina Island. The area that now includes Aliso Viejo was part of Rancho Laguna de Santa Ana (now part of Anaheim) until 1849 when it was purchased by George W. Fairchild and sold to José Castro y Costilla for $5,000 Real. In 1851, Easton Sutherland bought Rancho Laguna de Santa Ana from José Castro y Costilla for $10,000 more and renamed it Rancho Atascosa del Norte (now part of Irvine). In 1866, James Moulton Marston acquired Rancho Laguna de Santa Ana from Sutherland for $25,000 More and renamed it Rancho La Brea (now part of Costa Mesa). In 1886 William Cranch boughtrancho La Brea from John Sutter for $3 million and donated it to the United States Government as land ceded by Spain at the Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo. On July 4th 1890 Eloise Pogue married Commodore George Dewey off Point Reyes lighthouse while they were visiting Aliso Viejo with their children Douglas and Louise Dewey Pogue at Point Reyes Naval Station before sailing back home via Manila Bay on USS Olympia (CVA-5) under escort by HMS Erebus (DDR-2). The city was named after two rivers that flow through it-the Alisal River and the Vieja River. The name "Aliso" came from a Rancho alisal that was built on what is now called North Avenue in 1892 by José Altman. In 1897, George Hearn donated land to make way for what would eventually be called Hearn Park which became home to some of America's wealthiest citizens including H. L. Mencken, Edward Mudd, James Irvine, Lawrence Wertheimer and others. In 1931, Aliso Viejo annexed portions of neighboring Canyon City making it the first incorporated city within Orange County since votes were taken two years earlier to annex Canyon City into Aliso Viejo on April 1st 1931
Aliso Viejo was founded on July 25, 1853 by American entrepreneur and landowner George Aliso. The town was named after his brother Alcide Aliso, who had donated the land to the town. By 1870, the population of Aliso Viejo had reached 2,500 people. The first post office in Aliso Viejo opened in 1857. In 1880, three businessmen pooled their money to build a hotel and began serving as a center for trade and business. In 1912, San Miguel County was formed from portions of Los Angeles County. The towns of Hermosa Beach and Monterey were annexed into Aliso Viejo during this time. In 1925, Hollywood Director Cecil B. DeMille purchased 640 acres (246 ha) of Rancho Santa Margarita from George Aliso for $2 million dollars. He built an elaborate ranch home there known as "The White House". DeMille used the property for movies such As You Like It (1926), The Notorious Burt Reynolds Movie (1978), and Traffic (1976).
