Gourmet coffee has been a part of the Aliso Viejo community for over sixty years. The first gourmet coffee shop in Aliso Viejo was founded by Harry Smith and his brother, Sam, in 1951. At that time, the town only had two stores and one grocery. In 1957, Gourmet Coffee opened its first commercial location on Cesar Chavez Street in downtown Aliso Viejo. From there, Gourmet Coffee grew to become one of the largest and most successful gourmet coffee brands in the United States. In 1965, Harry Smith passed away and his son Sam took over running Gourmet Coffee. After Sam's death in 1978, Harry's widow Mrs. Smith took over management of Gourmet Coffee until her death in 2000. DuringMrs. Smith's ownership, Gourmet Coffee continued to grow and develop new products including their popular Turkish-Style Coffees which are now sold throughout North America under several different names such as Thomas Keller's French Press Café & Tea Room or Starbucks' ArabianArabian Roastery & Cafe). In 2006, Mrs. Smith's daughter Stephanie helped take over management of Gourmet Coffee with responsibility for marketing and sales as well as providing support to other departments within the company like café operations and brewing/processing/handling operations .
