In 1795, Captain José Antonio Bodega granted Rancho San Antonio de la Laguna to Francisco Palou for his own personal use. In 1802, Don Miguel de la Torre acquired Rancho La Muerte from Captain Bodega for $2,500. By 1810, Alisal Villa was built on the original grant lands east of Mission Bay with landowning families like Isidro Lopez and José Gabriel Abad Santos among them. In 1835, Antonio Canseco bought part of Rancho La Laguna from Juan Pablo II Castro for $822 per acre ($ today). On September 12 of that year he donated part of this land to the Methodist Episcopal Church in honor of his father-in-law Fray Diego Rivera who had preached there many years earlier; it became known as Canseco Heights (later renamed Monterey Hills). On February 14th 1840 Mexican nationals Martin Gomez and Manuel Nieto were fatally shot by ranch hand Joaquin Curiel near what is now El Sobrante Boulevard in what is now known as Chavez Ravine. This event later served as an impetus for formation of Aliso Viejo's first police department which was created on November 15th 1850 by Sheriff James Fenton under then Mayor James Worthy’s direction A new post office called "Aliso Viejo" opened in 1887 after service at Paseo del Pacifico until 1888 when it moved to its current location at Broadway and Morro Road . It became an incorporated town on January 1st 1912 with a population of 997 people . On December 5th 1917 Japan bombed Pearl Harbor causing widespread destruction throughout Southern California which touched Aliso VieJO especially hard with many citizens working in nearby cities during World War II . The military installed a radar station atop Mount Wilson overlooking downtown during World War II which eventually caused severe damage to both the town center and old buildings within . The Japanese gift shop next door closed due to fire over Christmas Eve 1944 but reopened just weeks later following emergency repairs by local resident Royce Youngstrom who also designed their new store front
