The American Canyon Army post, in California’s Mojave Desert, was established on December 7, 1861. It was the first military post in what is now the United States of America. The post was manned by U.S. Volunteers and Mexican Americans who fought in the Civil War. In 1892, the post was redesignated as Camp Cooke and later renamed Fort Irwin after General George Custer who died at its command during the Indian Wars of 1877-1881. The fort closed in 1906 and remained abandoned until it reopened in 1961 as Fort Irwin Army Museum which is still open to the public today. In 1916, World War I Veterans Memorial Day was celebrated at Camp Cooke with a ceremony which included an artillery salute from Battery H of the 2nd California Infantry Regiment (Athletic Company) under Captain Harry Prentice. This event marked one of only a few occasions when battery guns were fired over enemy lines for ceremonial purposes within American Canyon Army Post boundaries. Today, American CanyonArmy Post remains home to 4 infantry battalions (2d & 3d Battalion), 1 armored battalion (1st Armored Brigade), 1 aviation squadron (1st Fighter Squadron), 5 cavalry commands including San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Department Cavalry Command; 5 ranger companies; 1 medical company; and numerous other support units which contribute to defense against terrorism, law enforcement and emergency services missions throughout Southern California!

The American Canyon, California history can be traced back to the time of the first humans that lived in the area. The first settlers were those who came overland from what is now Mexico City. They were looking for a new place to live and work. They found this spot because it was perfect for farming and they also found that it had a natural waterfall that they could use as their water source. The Americans started living in this area for a while before they made any permanent structures. Eventually, they started building homes and businesses here. The first store was built on the east side of the canyon by pioneers David Waddell and his wife Lucy in 1853. This store became one of the most important in this area because it provided goods and services to the people around here. In1902, when America acquired its independence from Great Britain, many of these people decided to move away from California because it was becoming too hot and humid there. They went back to Mexico City where they founded other businesses there. However, some of these people still resided in California after their return home. Some of them even started creating things like churches and schools here in order to keep these places alive during times when Californians didn’t have any business opportunities or education opportunities outside of their state borders. Eventually, American Canyon turned into one of the most important towns in Northern California because it was home to so many different types of people who had come here for different reasons including work, trade, entertainment, etcetera (Wright 1946). Over time, American Canyon became well-known for its educational institutions such as San Francisco State University which opened its doors in 1915; UC Berkeley which received its charter in 1912; and Northern College which moved into its current location on Highway 99 near Interstate 5 just north of Redding on October 1st 1949 (Galloway 1979). Additionally, American Canyon has been known for its annual wine festival which takes place every year at various locations throughout Northern California starting with Paso Robles on May 15th until ending at Ukiah on November 7th (American Canyon Winefest website).
The American Canyon region in California has been inhabited by the indigenous people of the area for over 10,000 years. The first European to visit the canyon was Spanish captain Juan Rodríguez Cabrillo on October 11, 1542. He named it San Miguel de Allende after his patron saint, Michaelangelos. The first permanent European settlement in California was at Mission San Gabriel Arcángel on February 2, 1769.
