American Canyon is a small town in the San Joaquin Valley of California. It was founded in 1858 by Mormon pioneers as a stop on their way to the Gold Rush. The first permanent settlers in American Canyon were members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (LDS Church). They arrived in 1858 and built a store and farm near present-day American Canyon. The LDS Church left American Canyon after they were excommunicated from the LDS church for polygamy. In 1861, some Mormon pioneers founded Cedar City, Utah, which became the second largest city in America. Many Mormons who had left American Canyon decided to move there because Cedar City offered more opportunities for business than Nauvoo, Illinois. Cedar City's success led to other Utah towns similarizing themselves into cities: Ogden (1865), Provo (1868), Logan (1871), Salt Lake City (1892). Many people who grew up in American Canyon continue living there today. Some have started their own businesses or gone on to become leaders in their communities.
In 1868, the American Canyon Railway was built in California. It connected the mining towns of Oregon City and Lassen City, California with the railroad at Butte. The company failed to make a profit and was sold to the Southern Pacific Railroad in 1872.
