The National Guard was first organized in American Canyon, California on October 25, 1912. The Chico County Sheriff’s Department had the idea to arm and train a battery of volunteer militiamen to provide law and order during World War I. In 1924, the Chico County Sheriff’s Department became part of the State Army and Militia Departments within the California National Guard. On July 1, 1930, all militia units were merged into the California National Guard under Governor Goodwin J. Lane.On September 9, 1940, President Franklin D. Roosevelt designated Chico County as a Training Area for Homecoming Star recruits from across America who would participate in WWII as “Operation Neptune” troops. From 1941-1945 over 4500 soldiers from Nevada’s 3rd Infantry Regiment (now the Reno/Sparks Battalion) trained at American Canyon while also serving in World War II with Regimental Combat Team 5th Infantry Division at Lingayen Gulf in Luzon Island Philippines

The California National Guard was established in 1933 as the Alaskan National Guardsman Reserve. The first unit to be stationed in American Canyon was the 1st Battalion, 9th Infantry Regiment. In 1945, the battalion became the 2nd Battalion, 9th Infantry Regiment and then the 3rd Battalion, 9th Infantry Regiment. In 1951, the 4th Battalion, 9th Infantry Regiment arrived from Fort Worth and became part of the United States Army Ground Forces. In 1957, Headquarters and Headquarters Battery were transferred to American Canyon from Mammoth Lakes.

Since the inception of the United States of America, there have been many different types of gifts given to its citizens. Today, federal law still requires each individual state to call up its respective national guard units for military drills or exercises whenever there is an emergency declared by President Obama or otherwise authorized by statute (e.g., natural disasters). However, because so many units are now automatic statewide membership once you join them (and because most people don’t realize this fact), there are ample opportunities every year for individuals in any state to receive a gift from their local Guard unit! In 1849, the United States acquired what is now California from Mexico in the Mexican-American War. The area now known as California was part of Alta California, which comprised much of what is today Arizona and New Mexico. This region was divided into several counties by 1852, with American Canyon County being created within Mono County. The first permanent settlers in Californias most northwestern corner were families who came overland from Oregon in 1851-1853, following a route that crossed the Sierra Nevada at Big Piney Pass. They called their new land "the Gadsden Purchase." In 1859, American Canyon County's first courthouse was built on the present day east side of US 101 near modern day Petrolia. In 1863, gold was discovered in nearby Siskiyou National Forest and quickly became an important factor in both county development and social life. Mining operations began soon after and various industries sprang up to support them such as smelting (a process used to produce coins), flour production, cattle herding and lumbering. The population grew rapidly during this period with many people coming to live near the goldfields because they could get free territory or labor for cheap wages. During World War II many Americans lived in tents on offer from local military bases across Northern California; these camps provided living quarters for troops until December 1942 when all facilities were closed due to air raids against Los Angeles City Hall and other targets in downtown Los Angeles
