The American Canyon Naval Base is a military installation located in the city of Coronado, California. It is home to the United States Navy's Sixth Fleet and various other branches of the military. The base was formed in 1951 as part of the buildup for the Cold War. In 1972, it became an armed forces station responsible for operations in Southern California. The base has been involved in several deployments throughout history, most notably during World War II when it was used as a landing strip for naval bombers flying over North America. That same year, NAS Miramar also hosted Task Force 58 (TF 58) which staged Operation Neptune's Spear – an amphibious assault against Japan – off Long Beach Island. TF 58 also included support from USS Enterprise (CVN-65) which provided gunfire support during the assault. NAS Miramar played a critical role during this operation by hosting refuelling facilities and providing transient berths for Assault Landing Ships (ALLs). In 1969, NAS Miramar became home to Helicopter Squadron One (HS 1) which served helicopters mounted with machineguns and torpedo warheads capable of sinking merchant ships travelling through San Diego Bay on their way to Mexico City or points north. HS 1 participated in numerous missions such as Operation Just Cause – which resulted in Chilean president Salvador Allende being overthrown – helicopterbased attacks against targets such as Santiago secret police stations and bridges across San Diego Bay were commonplace throughout the 1970s and 1980s. By 1992, HS 1 had transitioned to AH-64 Apache helicopter squadron with its first Apaches arriving at NAS Miramar that year from Marine Corps MC-130J Super Hornets stationed at Yuma Proving Ground near Phoenix Arizona Territory rendering HS 1 obsolete. However, due to its location within close proximity to both active duty US naval installations Coronados' dockside pier still remains operational today - serving as one of many tourist attractions withinCoronado itself!
