The American Canyon Navy Shipyard was founded in 1912 by Rear Admiral Harry W. Koch and his son, Rear Admiral Carl M. Koch. The shipyard produced the USS Arizona (1941), USS Calumet (1944), USS Halsey (1945) and USS Princeton (1946). In 1951, the yard merged with the California Shipbuilding Corporation to form the California Naval Shipyards, which continued producing navy ships until it closed in 1984. Navy gifts have been a part of American Canyon's history for over 100 years, starting with items given to sailors as rewards for good behavior onboard warships during World War I. From then on, naval gift giving grew more widespread and commonplace in America. The first post-war gift from the United States government was a destroyer, HMS Warrior, donated by Captain John Jervis of HMS Gloucester in 1948.
