Anaheim, California is a city in southern Orange County, California. The population was 771,505 as of the 2010 census[1] and 1,056,693 as of 2016 estimate[2]. On March 12th 1857, Mexican soldiers opened fire upon a small party of Anglo-American settlers who had gathered to celebrate Easter at Rancho Santa Ana de Tustin (now part of Irvine).[3][4] One man died and three men were wounded before retreatment under cover could be made; this event became known as the Tustin Massacre. In 1860, General Pedro Cisneros agreed to sell parts of Alhambra Creek valley to Andrew Irvine for $10 per acre ($ in current dollars). This led to further development around what are now Downtown LA and Midtown LA.[5][6] The first post office called Anaheim was established in 1865.[7] It grew rapidly due to railroads being developed in that area – one such railroad company being Southern Pacific Railroad – which brought workers and commerce into town.[8][9] By 1870, there were over 100 businesses in downtown Anaheim employing 500 people,[10] making it one of the most prosperous cities westofthe Mississippi River after New York City.[11][12][13][14] By 1900 it had declined somewhat due largely to World War I rationing but regained some prosperity when air travel took off during World War II[15][16]. However growth slowed following war-time recession[17], until becoming increasingly struggling during local economic downturns starting in 2005–2006[18].
