Anderson, California is a city in Kern County, California, United States. The population was 397 at the 2010 census. It is located on the east side of the Kern River and bordered by Bakersfield to the south, Los Angeles to the north, and Tulare County to the west. The name Anderson comes from Spanish pioneers José Alvarado and Manuel Antonio Anderson who founded a ranch there in 1819. Anderson is first mentioned as "Andersons" in 1820 when José Alvarado and Manuel Antonio Anderson traded goods with George Sale at what is now known as Central Avenue and H Street in downtown Anderson. In 1827, John Sutter established Sutter's Fort at what is now called Main Street and 2nd Avenue in present-day Bakersfield. As early as 1821 Maria Elena Sanchez had been living among Mission San Gabriel Arcángel Indians near present-day Fresno. In December of that year she married another Indian named Juan de Padilla alias Pico de la Cruz y Mendoza; they were later baptized into Christianity under Father Junípero Serra at Mission San Francisco Arcángel on January 24, 1822.
