The United States Air Force (USAF) was founded in 1947 as the United States Army Air Forces. In 1991, following the fall of communism, the USAF was merged into the Department of Defense (DoD). In 1881, Captain Anderson donated land to establish a town in honor of his son-in-law, American banker and politician Nathaniel P. Banks. The town was named after Banks and was established on March 14, 1881. The first vineyards were planted outside of Andersons original town limits which are today home to some of the largest wineries in the area. The Town of Anderson grew quickly and by 1902 had a population of over 1,000 people. By 1907, there were six wineries producing over 100 barrels per day with an additional twelve making wine for local consumption only! In 1916, Andersons first postcard offering tastings arrived from Napa Valley and soon thereafterAnderson became one of the leading wineproducing cities in Northern California! Today,Anderson’s artesian groundwater wells provide ample water for grape farming while also providing rich soil that helps to support vines; this allows grapes to grow at high altitudes where other crops do not survive. 1) In 1915 when Captain George Anderson donated land to establish a town named after him in honor of his son-in-law Nathaniel Panks (the namesake for modern day San Francisco), he likely knew that wine would become an important part of our community's culture - it has!
