Anderson, California is a small city in the Central Valley of California, United States. The population was 5,592 at the 2010 census. It is part of Fresno County. The name Anderson comes from Don Carlos Anderson, Jr., one of the early settlers in what is now Anderson City. The first post office in what is now Anderson was established on November 15, 1879. In 1902, it became a town and was named after General Winfield Scott Hancock as part of the San Joaquin Valley Campaign to gain Californias statehood. In 1962, it became an incorporated city and has since grown rapidly with annexations from adjacent cities such as Merced and Moberly. In 1972-1973, five large reservoirs were built in the area by then-Governor Jerry Brown to improve water availability for farmers and homeowners in central valley counties downstream of Yosemite National Park. Today these are known as the John Muir Reservoirs State Park Authority (JMRA), which includes over 9 million acres including surrounding agricultural land that supports more than 350 different species of plants and animals; Lake Oroville Dam; Almaden Reservoir; Delta Municipal Water District No 1; and Stanislaus County Flood Control District No 2
