Anderson, California is a small town in Kern County, California. The population was 2,826 at the 2010 census. It is located on the southern edge of Kern County and has a total area of 23 square miles (60 km2). The community is named after John Anderson who settled there in 1859. The first permanent settler in what would become Anderson was James Grafton in 1859. He built a cabin on the site of present-day Villa Park and renamed it Anderson in honor of his friend John Anderson from Kentucky. In 1862, Isaac Newton established a gristmill and store here before moving to Yuba City to open a mill there. In 1865, Captain Wm Halsey set up a post office near present-day Bakersfield with mail service only between Yuba City and San Francisco Bay Area until 1865 because he could not get anyone to come live in the new town he had created. The first school District No. 1 opened here on May 10th 1870 by Superintendent Jno Atherton with Mrs Matson as teacher. On November 3rd 1870, voters approved an election for School District No 1 which became effective January 1st 1871 when that district replaced District No 5 which had been organized two years earlier. There were only four schools at this time: one for girls and three for boys; each school burned down within six months of its opening due to lack of funds or neglect by the officials responsible! "Anderson", "Grafton", "Newton", "Atherton" are all initialism namesakes used rod their corresponding townsites throughout Kern County during this period - these early settlers simply did not have surnames so they went by their first known name or hometown designation alone! This continued until 1915 when county officials decided that everyone should have surnames so all citizens could be more easily identified during government functions etc... Consequently, most people today associated with one particular settlement or place within Kern County at any given time will generally know more about that than about another locality even if that locality has experienced less major development over those many decades!
