Anderson, California is a small town located in Contra Costa County, California. The population was 5,471 at the 2010 census. It is part of the San Francisco Bay Area and is adjacent to Walnut Creek. The first settlers in Anderson arrived in 1847 and named it after Captain George Anderson of the United States Navy who had been shipwrecked on the coast of Northern California. In 1873, an act of Congress designated Anderson as a site for a new military post because of its strategic location near Concord and Stockton. The post was also intended to provide defense against Chinese Invasion during the 1870s. Anderson became a city on July 1, 1906 when it incorporated as a result of state legislation legalizing cities within Contra Costa County. The city's first mayor was John Ahern and its first street name was Cedar Street. By 1930, Anderson had reached its peak with over 100 businesses and 2,000 citizens. However, World War II brought many challenges to the city including increased crime rates; however, that changed with the arrival of American soldiers in 1945 who quickly beganocating jobs throughout the city to help combat wartime shortages caused by relocation camps for Japanese Americans living in northern California. The name of the town originated from Captain George Anderson, an American lawyer and explorer who traveled through what is now Anderson Valley on his way to claimants for land grants near Sacramento. Captain Anderson's party was joined by another group of Americans, led by John Crain, Jr., in 1858 when they explored what would become Fresno County. In 1861, General Edmund Kirby Smith relocated most of the Californio settlers west of Truckee Lake into what is now parts of Fresno and Kern counties as part of his effort to open new territory for settlement. This move ended up splitting the townships into which this area had been divided andAnderson became one of those townships. In 1865, gold was discovered at Sutter's Mill near present-day Fillmore and earlymining operations began here; silver also came down with some success but it wasn't until 1886 that significant quantities were mined here before miners turned their attention to gold again When World War I began in 1914 a large influx of soldiers arrived in northern California looking for a war where they could make money After troops had stopped coming home there were few opportunities for them to get paid so many men started working off their passage pay shoveling coal into mines or working odd jobs such as driving wagons across country By 1920 over 60%of all workers were off-road because there weren't any other places to go . After World War II heavy demand from Korea brought more people here including veterans who formed their own businesses manufacturing plastics and other products
