Anderson, California is a small town in the Central Valley of California located about an hour east of Sacramento. The first settler in Anderson was George Armstrong Copley who arrived in 1847. He opened a general store on Main Street which served as the nucleus of present day Anderson when it was platted as a town by Nathan Hale Smith on December 21st, 1867. Anderson is a city in Ventura County, California. It was founded in 1871 by George Anderson and named for him. The population was 12,752 at the 2010 census. The site of present-day Anderson was first occupied by the Chumash people during the early 1800s. The area became part of Rancho Los Campos de Santa Clara de Atascadero in 1853. In 1861, John Sutter arrived in what is now Ventura County and began to build his new settlement on the east side of the San Pedro River. He named it Californias new City of Ventura after himself and his fellow settlers, who had come from Northern California. In 1865, Samuel Morse built a toll road from Los Angeles to Neary's Station on the Western Pacific Railroad so that goods could be brought into and out of Southern California. This event helped begin Anderson's growth as a commercial center for southern Ventura County. By 1870, Anderson had more than 100 residents and was hosting events such as fairs and an agricultural exposition each year. During this time, there were also several schools established in downtown Anderson: one opened in 1872; another opened in 1884; and another opened in 1888 after being founded by Drury Dodge with support from local farmers.
