Anderson, California is a city in Contra Costa County, California. The population was 41,471 at the 2010 census. It is the largest settlement in Contra Costa County by population. The eastern edge of Anderson shares an ancient and well-preserved border with Sambaqui Municipality in Chile. The first European to visit this area was Francisco de Anza on November 7, 1769. He named it San Francisco de los Andes after a mountain peak in Chile which he saw while exploring the new world. In 1821, Captain James Cook discovered Hawaii when his ship Albatross passed through the Strait of Magellan and called this area "Hawaiana" (modern day Anderson). When American Commodore John Duyall visited America during his circumnavigation of the world from 1802-1804 he called this area "Cities of California". In 1850, prospector Sylvester Marsh discovered oil at Red Bluff Cove on San Pablo Bay and soon production began there for Standard Oil Company. By 1861 over 20 rigs were sunk off shore trying to find oil; only one successful discovery was made before production started to decline due to lack of infrastructure and competition from other companies such as ChevronTexaco and ConocoPhillips.
