The United States Air Force Deployed Gift History in Antioch, California on December 5, 1948. As part of the San Francisco-based 8th Bomb Wing's (later 9th Bomb Wing) assignment to support air defense of the West Coast during the post-World War II era, this unique and significant event resulted in the largest gift ever made to a USAF unit. The gift was an F4U Corsair fighter aircraft Serial Number 36-1665 from The squadron's original owner, The Flying Tigers. It had been donated by Captain Chennault and his group of PBY Catalina pilots who fought against Japan in World War II. Upon its arrival at Moffett Field, California, on December 6th it was adorned with a Lockheed Martin "Pogo" propeller blade insignia and flown into General Curtis LeMay's headquarters at Wright-Patterson AFB for delivery to Major General Creighton Abrams. Major General Abrams had commanded U.S. Army troops that took part in Operation Crossroads which was designed to open up Japanese airspace so Allied bombers could bomb Tokyo docksyards and other strategic targets without fear of retaliation from the Japanese military. Consequently The Flying Tigers aircraft were used as target practice by American ground forces during their operation while also providing valuable reconnaissance information about Japanese installations near San Francisco which helped contribute greatly to Axis victory over Allied forces during World War II. Aftermath of WWII: After Japan's surrender on August 15, 1945, all large items such as aircraft or weapons stored abroad were seized by allies as part of the occupation process under Chapter VII of the Geneva Convention prohibiting any kind of forced acquisition or transfer of property not owned by belligerents until they were liberated by them under similar circumstances (euphemistically called "the Green Book"). This included Gift History airplanes carrying registration numbers beginning with 36-1665 which reverted back to their former owners upon liberation from Japan following Emperor Hirohito's acceptance of normalized diplomatic relations between China and Japan on September 29th 1945 following months of secret negotiations overseen by Secretary Dulles at Yalta Conference among Roosevelt’s advisors including Allen Dulles and Cordell Hull
