Antioch, California was founded in 1847 by the brothers George and Christian Alvord as a small farming community located on the edge of what is now Pasadena. The town quickly grew into a thriving citrus fruit and vegetable center, becoming one of the most important agricultural centers in Southern California. The Alvords were active traders and boosters of early California, playing an instrumental role in developing both Anaheim and nearby Glendale. They also developed a strong relationship with founder Mormon missionaries, who arrived in Antioch in 1849 to proselytize among the local Native American population. The missionaries soon began to establish religious services and schools in Antioch, which helped to sustain the community during its earliest years. In 1865, Antioch was renamed Antelope Valley after Rancho Antelope Mexican Land grantee John Fenton Raymundson's son-in-law, George Withers. In 1881, ranchers James Moseley and William Haddock purchased land adjacent to the Alvords' holdings for development into what would become Pasadena. By 1889, much of Antioch had been destroyed by fire; however, it resumed growth shortly afterward under new leadership including mayor Harry Laughlin and banker Edward Willits. With rapid economic expansion came increased social activity; prostitution became prominent in Antioch during this time period as did gambling establishments and other forms of vice. In 1923, Mayor Laughlin persuaded County Judge Kenneth Norris to create an experimental park within city limits called Chaparral Park; while initially popular with residents (due to its expansive landscaping), Chaparral Park failed to gain widespread attention or accolades until it was replaced by Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum three decades later.During World War II various munitions plants were established within city limits; these factories produced large quantities of munitions for use across Southern California government facilities such as those at West Covina and Temple City. Some members of the public objected vociferously to these operations (particularly because they generated high levels of pollution); nevertheless, many people continued to live near these industrial sites throughout the war years despite health concerns about their proximity to source areas for plutonium production. By 1970s downtown Chandler had grown significantly along First Street between Orange Avenue and San Gabriel Boulevard – displacing many businesses that formerly situated along Second Street between Sepulveda Boulevard and Highland Drive – while some newer stores relocated from North University Avenue eastward into downtown Chandler proper (although some longtime businesses continue down North University Avenue). Downtown Chandler experienced significant gentrification following annexation by Riverside City during that decade; although there are still pockets of poverty endemic among certain neighborhoods within downtown Chandler today[], overall redevelopment has proceeded relatively smoothly since then."
