The History of Antioch, California can be traced back to the late 1800s when two men named John and James Smith bought a ranch in what is now Antioch, California. The Smiths were farmers who also developed a small business in the town. In 1906, they sold their land to the United States government for $2 million. This land was designated as part of the Rancho Bernardo Indian Reservation which was established by President William Howard Taft in 1908. In 1924, the United States Postal Service organized a post office in Antioch and named it after General Philip Sheridan. The post office operated until 1959 when it was closed due to lack of mail volume. In 1936, Antioch became an incorporated city and adopted a mayor-council form of government with a Mayor-Council body. In 1941, General Douglas MacArthur came to town and gave a speech at Western Union Hall which later became known as "The MacArthur Speech". In 1945, during World War II, the Army's 9th Infantry Division arrived in town and set up camp near what is now Old Town Square downtown. For several months during that year, all Syrians living along Highway 10 north of town were required to leave because they were being used as food storage by American troops stationed at Fort Jessup on nearby San Jacinto Mountain. Following World War II, many businesses moved out of town because of difficult economic times; however, others such as KFC (later Starbucks) continued to operate from locales such as Sam’s Club across the street from City Hall until 1997 when they relocated into new facilities within blocks of City Hall themselves. After years of debate between City Councilmembers regarding whether or not to rezone property adjacent to City Hall so that development could take place on both sides of High Street 'the heart'of Antioch', finally approval was given for large scale development on both sides - resulting in over 1 million sq ft being built on high ground overlooking downtown since then!
