The Coast Guard District of Antioch, California was created on December 4, 1941 as the first Coast Guard Service District in the State of California. The district consisted of three stations- Seal Beach, Santa Rosa and Monterey- and had a complement of only twelve officers and men. On January 1, 1942 the Coast Guard Station at Antioch was transferred to the new District. On July 28, 1944 the Headquarters for all Coast Guard districts were moved from Long Beach to Antioch due to continued requests by coastal communities for an easier access to coastal guard services. In 1948 a new station was built at Carmel Creek in order to better serve that community. In 1953 a new station was built at Point Reyes National Seashore in order to better serve that community. In 1957 a new station was built at Coyote Valley in order to better serve that community. In 1959 another new station was built at San Rafael – this time serving as a Marine Corps Air Station with an Auxiliary Landing Field capable of handling aircraft up until jet aircraft became available. 1st SFG (later 7th SFG) arrived in El Sobrante on October 17, 1969 after four years service from Hayward; these Marines formed part of "Operation Neptune's Spear" which led directly into Vietnam War era Operation Rolling Thunder which targeted Phnom Penh City - one month later Thanh Thien city fell and then Saigon on November 3rd 1967

As one of the most populous and geographically diverse cities in California, Antioch had a long and tumultuous history. The city was founded by the Spaniards in 1777 as part of the Mexican colony of Alta California. After Mexican independence was proclaimed in 1821, Antioch became an American territory administered by a Board of Commissioners. In 1846, during the years following California's admission to the United States as a state, Antioch was again incorporated into Alta California as part of an effort to keep Californians from seceding. Although portions of Antioch were annexed to Fresno County in 1901, its downtown remained independent until it was annexed to Fresno on January 1, 1924. During the 1930s and 1940s, however, much of downtown Antioch experienced rapid decay because of successive waves of economic insecurity brought on by World War II and then post-war recession. Despite this downturn, many businesses still survived into the late 1980s when all but three blocks east of Market Street were destroyed in a fire that swept through downtown for days after Christmas 1984. With only two blocks remaining standing by early 1990s standards—the block across from East Side Park now houses a mix of commercial and residential spaces—the future for downtown Antioch appeared very uncertain indeed. In 1849, gold was discovered near what is now Antioch and many settlers began to arrive, including William Hammond, who named his new town after his friend and business partner John C. Fremont. The city officially became a incorporated city in 1857 and soon grew into one of the most important settlements in Northern California. As the city evolved, it became known for its manufacturing industry, which included such products as lumber, textiles, printing paper and automobiles. In addition to its economic importance, Antioch also played an important role in American culture during this time period.
