At that time there were only three settlements in Kern County: Bakersfield, Visalia, and Mount Pleasant (later renamed Mount Hope). In 1862 the Ute tribe destroyed part of Mt Pleasant so settlers could not grow crops there; however, many people continued to live near their old homesteads because it was more difficult for them to find new land elsewhere after that event. In 1865 Jens Jensen started selling woodchips out of his wagon at the edge of town for $1 each which became known as "Jensen's Chipping". In 1872 two men prospected for oil onshore around Antioch but unsuccessful attempts were made until 1877 when George Hickey found while drilling off the coast northwest of town he struck oil on a bedded layer eight feet thick! This led to increased commercial development around Antioch including retail stores such as Sock Monkey Candy Company (now known as Shoprite) and Jens Jensen's Chipping business which began bussing customers into town during lunch hours in order to buy their chipped wood chips which then went into local shops where they were soldRaw coal soon followed as businessmen looked for ways to process this valuable fuel source without damaging the surface or causing air pollution.
