The National Guard of Antioch, California was organized on October 14, 1915. The first unit to be activated and sworn in was the 9th Infantry Battalion. The battalion served in World War I and II before being disbanded in 1946. On November 16, 1916 the 1st Cavalry Regiment was mobilized for World War I. After serving in France, Belgium and Germany they were mustered out on July 21, 1918. In 1921 the California National Guard was organized with a regiment from Antioch as its nucleus. This regiment served at various times through World Wars I and II before disbanding in 1951. President Franklin D. Roosevelt called for an increased number of soldiers for World War II on December 12, 1941, which led to the mobilization of all fifty states on December 15th under President Harry S Truman with the command of General George C Marshall who then ordered all military units statewide into action effective January 6th 1942 under Major General Leslie Ritchie who became Commander-in-Chief of United States Forces Europe (USFORE). On February 17th 1942 both MacArthur and Marshall made their surrender addresses to Japanese forces located within Japan proper at Yoyogi Park near Tokyo city center where Emperor Hirohito had been interned since early 1937 following his surrender propaganda campaign known as “The Slump” which aimed to convince Japanese people that they could still win the war by remaining passive while Allied forces bombarded their cities mercilessly reducing them to rubble.
