Antioch is a city in Northern California, United States. The population was 826 at the 2010 census. It is the second-largest city in Contra Costa County, with a population of 930, and the twelfth-largest city in California. Antioch was founded by Spanish colonists on November 17, 1847 as part of Rancho San Pablo. It became an incorporated town on December 15, 1872. The name "Antioch" comes from the Latin word antiochus meaning "the first watchtower." The original settlers were members of what is now known as the Mission Santa Clara de Asís community near Petaluma. In 1851 their bishop, José Joaquín Arguelles y Pacheco organized them into a parish and named it Antipodes after Saint Peter and Paul's church in Rome. On July 4, 1852 they built the first courthouse and jail in Antioch; it seated 100 people and cost $5,000 to construct. The first post office opened in 1865; it was called Petaluma because mail arrived by stagecoach fromasmuch as that area lay within sight of San Francisco (then called Alameda). In 1870s two companies formed to develop land east of town: Rancho Rinconada for Captain George Hearn (founder father of Google), and Rancho Seco for Don Miguel Alcala y Benavides (founder father of East Bay Express Airlines). In 1873 Captain Hearn sold his interest to Juan Bautista Orozco who then developed it into one of Northern California's most prosperous agricultural valleys with orchards, vineyards, cheese factories and other businesses including a lumberyard at present day Hayward Center which once handled up to 16 feet (4 m) of wood an hour! For many years there was also an Antioch Millinery Company which made high quality millinery for women's wear such as gloves, hats and bonnets until World War II when production stopped due to wartime rationing

The town was named in honor of General George Washington Antioch, who had served as Commander-in-Chief of the United States Volunteers during the Mexican War. The first post office in Antioch opened on December 1, 1850. The first settlers were Potters from New England.
