The small community of Apple Valley was established in 1887 as part of the Rancho Cucamonga Mexican land grant given to José Joaquín Cámpora by Governor Pio Pico. In 1903, the name of the community was changed to Apple Valley after Michael Appleton who had purchased some of the original cattle ranchos on which the community sit. Apple Valley experienced significant growth during World War II due to soldiers stationed there for the war effort. Many businesses were opened up and many families moved into the area; however, since the end of World War II, much has changed about Apple Valley including declining population and economic conditions. Today, very little remains of what once characterized this once thriving community- only a few homes remain standing and most of its businesses have closed down or been relocated elsewhere within San Bernardino County. However, while much has changed about Apple Valley over time it still retains many memories from those that lived here including its strong agricultural heritage which continues to be felt today in local crops such as apples and grapes; its close-knit family atmosphere which is still observable today in things like apple picking festivals; and most importantly its rich history which can be found written all around town both online and through oral traditions passed down from generation to generation
