Apple Valley is located in the northernmost corner of San Francisco County and is bordered by wooded hills to the east and northwest, Interstate 80 to the north, and Yountville to the south. The valley was first populated by Native Americans, who lived along the Hetch Hetchy River. The area that now includes Apple Valley was part of Rancho San Pablo until 1848, when it passed into Mexican hands. After California became a United States territory in 1853, ranchos were granted here as well. In 1875, John J. Macdonald bought 1 million acres of land here from José Joaquin Miller for $5 per acre ($100 million at current prices). This land would become known as Silicon Valley. In 1906, Apple Valley was founded when George Eastman created Empire Telephone Company with partner Adolph Ruppe. The company built its first phone booth on Telegraph Road in what is now Apple Valley Elementary School District No. 214 (now part of Kaiser Permanente), which served as the companys headquarters for many years before moving to its current location on El Camino Real in 1928. In 1911-12, Apple Valley also had its first football team when Pacific Coast Athletic Conference member Santa Clara University fielded a team under coach Max Frost (later head coach at Stanford). In 1916-17 Empire Telephone built a water tower on unpaved Coyote Hills Road near present-day Fremont High School; this structure remains one of the earliest public works in Silicon Valley and still stands today (and can be seen from Macdonald Avenue). The arrival of World War II changed all of this however: Empire Telephone turned over their building site to Kaiser Permanente and began production on an analog telephone system called “Empire” which used vacuum tubes rather than electromechanical devices common then. With war looming ever closer and profits dropping due to wartime shortages caused by shortages elsewhere within industry, Kaiser decided not to continue production after hostilities ended but instead divest themselves of their consumer electronics businesses including EmpireTelephone Co., Inc., which continued operations briefly before being merged into Westinghouse Electric Corporation in 1945; these days you can still find remnants of EmpireTelephoneCo.(?) nearby at 3015 El Camino Real pic) . The idea behind setting up a farmstead here soon proved too good ta let go though: starting out with just 50 acres (!), they gradually increased their holdings until eventually encompasses 4square miles inside today’s Silicon Valley boundaries…..includingallofwhatistodayApplesvalValley(!)AND MUCH OFWHAT IS TODAYFremont.(!) All told, they acquired some 20 square miles HERE IN APPLE VALLEY OVER THE NEXT SEVENTY YEARS……..EVEN AFTER WITHDRAWING FROM KAISER INDUSTRIES! By 1955 they had expanded their holdings again TO 100 ACRES!!! Today there are OVER 2 MILION ACRES OF LAND WORTH SINCE THAT TIME….. AND THEY ARE NEVER GONE UPON THEIR PLAN AGAIN!!!!!!!!!
Apple Valley is a city in southern California, located about 20 miles south of downtown Los Angeles. The population was 54,898 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Los Angeles metropolitan area. Apple Valley was founded in 1887 by farmers who wanted to grow apples on their land near what is now Warner Bros. studio lot and movie theater complex. The name "Apple Valley" originated as an early word for " orchard." By 1910, the population had grown to 100 people and it became known as a agricultural center with apple trees and fields stretching out behind it. In 1916, Apple Valley was incorporated as a city and named in honor of John Maynard Keynes, then the British economist whose work helped spur economic growth in Britain during World War I. The city's first mayor was Hiram Johnson (1916-18), who served two terms after being elected on the condition that he not run for re-election until he could approve economic development plans developed by City Manager Harry Hutton. In 1971, Apple Valley annexed neighboring Brentwood which at that time had a population of over 25,000 people and included much of Beverly Hills including such high-end shopping malls as Saks Fifth Avenue and Neiman Marcus . This annexation set off years of demographic change in Apple Valley with many new residents moving into Brentwood from other parts of Southern California because there were no restrictions on how much land each family could own when they moved in - something that continued through to the late 1990s when Brentwood began to experience rapid gentrification Trends.. The annexation also increased its budget because Brentwood became one of five cities within Los Angeles County thatshared resources with the larger county government through funding allocations called " Township Services". This gave residents closer access to services like transportation and police contact than they would have otherwise had while also contributing to stability within the community during times of budget shortfalls or conflict between township officials and city officials
