The popularity of coffee continued to grow throughout the 1800s, and by 1900, Apple Valley had over 30 cafes serving different types of coffee. In 1907, a Mr. & Mrs. Schaefer founded an ice cream parlor on Seventh Street in Apple Valley which became one of the most popular tourist destinations in the valley for decades. Throughout the years, many people have contributed to the growth of coffee within Apple Valley - from entrepreneurs and business owners who started their own businesses to friends and family who donated time or money to help others enjoy great cups of Joe! Apple Valley is a small town in the East Bay of San Francisco, California. The population was 15,857 at the 2010 census. It is located on the eastern edge of San Francisco Peninsula and shares borders with Fremont to the east, Sacramento to the north, and Berkeley to the west. The first permanent settler in Apple Valley was George Hillyer in 1847. The name "Apple Valley" comes from a large apple tree that he found on his farm. In 1851, Dr. Samuel Morse established a hospital in Apple Valley after a patient died from yellow fever there while sick with another disease. After Morse's death in 1853, his widow donated land for an infirmary and school district was organized around it in 1854. In 1862, John Fenton bought land northeast of Apple Valley from Rancho Rincon de la Loma founder Manuel Dorrego for $1 million dollars to build what would become known as Stanford University. Palo Alto residents George Burgess and Edward Thorp contributed money to finance Fenton's university project which became one of Silicon Valley's most successful ventures during its early years. After construction began on campus on May 25th of that year (the same day as nearbyOakland), students led by Burgess created what would become known as "the Stanford MARATHON" which ran from New Haven Street uphill through Stanford University Campus until it reached Interstate 80 near Palo Alto
